Donald Trump silences the money affair: the conviction will enter a judgment of guilt on his file.

A US judge on Friday convicted President-elect Donald Trump of his criminal conviction stemming from money paid to a porn star. The sentencing will enter a judgment of guilt into his record; however, he will not go to jail or pay a fine.

Donald Trump faced a prison sentence of up to four years. Manhattan Judge Juan M. Merchan, however, chose a sentence that skirted thorny constitutional questions by effectively ending the case.

The verdict ensured that the Republican would become the first U.S. president to be convicted of a crime.

The judge said he had to take aggravating circumstances into account before imposing a sentence. However, he added, the legal protection Trump will receive as president is one factor that trumps all others.

The judge said the legal protections a president enjoys do not have the power to erase a jury's verdict.

Trump was convicted of 34 counts of falsifying business records in May of this year. The judge, however, imposed the lightest possible criminal sanction: unconditional release.

“Never before has this court been confronted with such a unique and remarkable set of circumstances. The only legal penalty that allows entry of a judgment of conviction without encroaching on the highest office in the land is an unconditional discharge,” the judge said.

The US president-elect attended the hearing virtually. He called his conviction a significant setback for New York and the New York justice system.

“It's been a very terrible experience. I think it's been a huge setback for New York and the New York justice system,” Trump said.

He said he was convicted for losing the US presidential election.

“This was done to damage my reputation, so I would lose the election,” he said.

Trump was accused of falsifying his company records to hide a $130,000 payment to porn actor Stormy Daniels. She was paid during the 2016 Trump campaign not to disclose her sexual relationship that took place a decade earlier.

Trump has denied any sexual relationship.
