Trump's Claims About Los Angeles Fire Hydrants Don't Hold Up

SACRAMENTO OK, I admit it. I'm biased. I hate it when an opportunistic politician capitalizes on the miseries of others and tries to score political points.

I'm especially biased when it's a president-elect speaking out without considering the facts and blaming a governor for fire hydrants going dry.

Not that Democrat Gavin Newsom is a perfect governor. But his California water policy had no more to do with Pacific Palisades hydrants drying up during a firestorm than Republican Donald Trump turned on the sprinklers at his golf course .

Journalists should not allow personal bias to seep into their stories, as Patrick Soon-Shiong, owner of the Los Angeles Times, reminded us. Journalists have long tried not to do this and have generally succeeded. But I'm not a journalist. I am a columnist who analyzes and gives his opinion. And yes, I'm biased, but on issues, not politics.

I've always thought that liberals, moderates, and conservatives all have good and bad ideas. Neither party has a monopoly on truth and justice, except when it comes to Trump.

I wanted to give Trump the benefit of the doubt and see if he really intended, as promised, to be a president for all Americans. But the guy just can't help himself.

When Trump blamed Newsom for hydrants drying up while the Pacific Palisades burned, it wasn't something people should dismiss as just another Trumpism.

This was a president-elect speaking out and showing his ignorance in a barrage of vengeance and callousness as thousands fled for their lives and hundreds of homes burned to the ground.

Yes, I'm partial to anyone who is that uncivil, especially when they don't follow the facts or, even worse, are a pathological liar.

So, let's recap what Trump did.

As dozens of fire hydrants dried up while fire crews battled flames in Pacific Palisades, the president-elect instinctively took to social media to point the finger at his left coast political opponent, the Democrat he tastelessly ridicules as Governor Newscum.

Gov. Gavin Newscum refused to sign the water restoration declaration submitted to him, which would have allowed millions of gallons of water from excess rain and melting snow from northern s 'flow daily in many areas of California, including areas currently burning virtually. apocalyptic way, Trump said.

He wanted to protect an essentially worthless fish called smelt, but didn't care about the people of California. The ultimate price has now been paid.

I will demand that this incompetent governor allow beautiful, clean, fresh water to flow into California. He is the one responsible for it. And to top it all off, no water for the fire hydrants, no firefighting planes. A real disaster.

Real nonsense, to put it politely.

First of all, what was this so-called water restoration declaration?

There is no such document, replied Izzy Gardon, Newsoms' communications director. It's pure fiction.

Trump was likely referring to his policy differences with Newsom over water exports from the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta to farmlands in the San Joaquin Valley. During his first presidency, Trump wanted to drain more fresh water from the Delta to irrigate the valley. But the two governors. Jerry Brown and Newsom took a more centrist approach, striving to strike a balance between farms and fishing.

Second, it's not the disappearance of the smelt, the Republicans' favorite target, that worries so many conservationists. It’s the rapid decline of the iconic salmon that once supported a world-class recreational fishery in the Delta and fueled a healthy commercial fishery on the coast. Salmon fishing seasons were closed recently to save what's left of the fish.

Third, despite Trump's bullshit, a lot of fresh Delta water is being pumped south to fill fire hydrants and firefighting plane tanks. Hundreds of millions of gallons of water flow through the California Aqueduct daily. Southland's major reservoirs are at historically high levels. Regardless, much of Los Angeles' water doesn't even come from the Delta. It flows from the Owens Valley and the Colorado River.

Fourth, fire hydrants dried up simply because there were too many fires to fight, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power explained. The storage tanks have become dry.

We have pushed the system to the extreme, said Janisse Quinones, DWP general manager and chief engineer. Demand was four times normal for 15 hours straight.

Yes, I'm biased against politicians who make things up.

But we have to listen to Trump because he might follow through on what he's yelling.

For example, Trump pledged during the presidential campaign to deny Newsom federal money to fight wildfires unless the governor diverted more water to farms.

This was apparently not an idle threat.

Trump initially refused to approve federal wildfire aid in 2018 until a staffer pointed out that Orange County, a recipient, was home to many voters who supported him, Politico reported . And in 2020, the Federal Emergency Management Agency rejected a request for help during several California wildfires until Republicans appealed to Trump.

So what will Trump look like when he becomes president again and wields real power, instead of just talking the talk?

Will he try to annex Greenland? Seize the Panama Canal? When asked by a reporter if he would commit not to use military or economic coercion to achieve these goals, he immediately replied: No.

Will he continue to call Canada our 51st state?

Yeah. I am biased against such immature and dangerous political leaders.
