Athens seeks balance with Ankara

Greece is treading a tight line in its relations with Turkey, seeking to maintain channels of dialogue while actively participating in regional alliances aimed at countering Ankara's growing influence, notably through Syria.
While Ankara now focuses on establishing dominance in Syria and anticipates geopolitical changes linked to the return of Donald Trump to the American presidency, Athens sees its bilateral relations with Turkey taking a back seat. Nonetheless, Turkish officials have sent signals of constructive engagement.
In a press conference addressed to international and Turkish media, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan highlighted Ankara's interest in a positive relationship with Athens. There is a positive relationship between Turkey and Greece, especially one that started at the leadership level, Fidan noted. He credited relations between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis with creating an environment conducive to resolving long-standing differences.
However, Fidan also acknowledged the internal pressures affecting Greek decision-making. We understand the internal political pressures that our Greek counterparts face, in particular the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs. If internal pressure was reflected only on Greece's real interests, as in the case of Turkey, a more rational framework could emerge, he noted.
Fidan expressed optimism about 2025, stressing that it is a window of opportunity to advance diplomatic efforts ahead of the next electoral cycles in both countries. Our president has always shown his availability on many issues, and we see that Mr. Mitsotakis shares a similar determination. I hope this determination will lead to meaningful steps, he said.
The Turkish Foreign Minister refrained from answering questions on a possible Turkish agreement on an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) with Syria or on the future of Cyprus. However, he stressed the need for a shared vision of peace in the region. I imagine a world in which Greece, Turkey and the two Cypriot communities solve their problems together, transforming the Aegean and the Mediterranean into zones of peace and prosperity, he added.
