Security tightened in Kashmir ahead of PM Modi's visit to inaugurate Z-Morh tunnel – The Week
Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Jammu and Kashmir to inaugurate the Z-Morh tunnel in Ganderbal district on January 13, security has been significantly beefed up across the valley. The Special Protection Group (SPG) oversees key security arrangements.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police, in collaboration with paramilitary forces, intensified vigil and surveillance for the smooth conduct of the event. Officials said increased security would remain in place until January 13. Police and paramilitaries have deployed additional personnel, surveillance with video surveillance systems is underway and checkpoints have been set up in several places.
In Sonamarg, security has been tightened and police, paramilitary forces and the army are coordinating. Area domination exercises, extensive searches and regular patrols are underway to protect the event and its participants.
The 6.5 kilometer Z-Morh Tunnel, a strategic infrastructure project, will connect Gagangir to Ganderbal in Sonamarg, providing year-round connectivity to the region. Traditionally, the region remained isolated in winter due to heavy snowfall. The opening of the tunnel will improve civil and military traffic to the region.
The inauguration will take place in the presence of Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
The Jammu and Kashmir government has ordered fourteen administrative secretaries to stay at the civil secretariat in Srinagar from January 10 to 13 to supervise related functions.
Built at a cost of Rs 2,680 crore, the Z-Morh Tunnel is a modern two-lane road tunnel equipped with features such as emergency passage and ventilation. The project is expected to boost winter tourism in Sonamarg and significantly improve connectivity with Ladakh.
Meanwhile, traffic on the Kargil-Srinagar highway, including Zoji La pass, will be suspended from January 11 to 14 due to icy conditions and unfavorable weather conditions. Maintenance work is planned during this period and traffic should resume on the route from January 14, weather permitting. This suspension is also considered part of the security measures for the Prime Minister's visit.
