Xi's special envoy attends Maduro's inauguration (Xinhua)

Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a special envoy to attend the third swearing-in of Venezuela's Nicolas Maduro, the official Xinhua news agency reported Saturday, underscoring Beijing's lonely position as one of Caracas's few international allies .
Maduro, a rebel, was sworn in for a new presidential term on Friday in a ceremony decried as illegitimate by the opposition and internationally, with Washington offering a $25 million reward for his arrest.
Washington and London have imposed sanctions on Maduro's regime, and only two prominent regional leaders – Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel and former Nicaraguan guerrilla Daniel Ortega – attended his inauguration.
Russian President Vladimir Putin sent his congratulations, but traditional left-wing allies, including Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, stayed away.
Xi's envoy Wang Dongming met Maduro at the presidential palace after the ceremony.
“Wang conveyed Xi's cordial greetings and best wishes to Maduro and congratulated him on his re-election as president of Venezuela,” Xinhua reported.
The two strengthened the “ironclad strategic partnership” between China and Venezuela, with Wang reportedly saying Beijing was willing to “develop” their friendship and “advance” bilateral relations.
“Maduro asked Wang to convey his utmost respect and sincere greetings to Xi,” the report continued.
Venezuela “is ready to partner with China to… elevate bilateral relations to a new level,” Maduro said, according to Xinhua.
On Friday, Maduro's challenger in the July election, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, recognized by the United States and much of Latin America as the rightful winner, said Maduro had “crowned himself dictator” and staged a “coup d’état”.
The US reward relates to drug trafficking charges dating back to 2020, two years after Maduro's first re-election in a vote also marred by allegations of fraud.
Maduro, a former bus driver and trade unionist, has clung to power for more than a decade through a mix of populism and repression.
His third term could see him stay in office until 2033.
The opposition is now waiting to see how US President-elect Donald Trump will treat Maduro when he returns to the White House later this month.
