Somalia, Ethiopia restore diplomatic ties after Trkiye-brokered deal

Somalia, Ethiopia restore diplomatic ties after Trkiye-brokered deal

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed met in Addis Ababa for the first time since the Ankara process, marking an important step towards restoring diplomatic relations broken for more than a year. The meeting resulted in the announcement that the two countries would restore full diplomatic relations, a move seen as crucial for regional stability in the Horn of Africa.

The visit follows a peace deal negotiated by Trkiye under the auspices of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan last month, which bridged a long-standing divide between the two countries.

The two leaders issued a joint statement reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations through full diplomatic relations in their respective capitals.

The agreement follows a warm welcome by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, during which the leaders engaged in high-level discussions aimed at strengthening relations and addressing mutual priorities.

Tensions between the two countries escalated in April 2024 when Somalia expelled Ethiopia's ambassador and closed consulates from Addis Ababa to Hargeisa. The dispute centered on a deal Ethiopia struck with Somaliland, a breakaway region of Somalia, to use the Red Sea port of Berbera. These tensions were eventually eased thanks to the Ankara Declaration negotiated by Trkiye.

Commitment to cooperation

Ethiopia's desire for access to the sea has long been a controversial issue, heightening tensions between neighboring countries. However, thanks to Trkiyes' mediation within the Ankara process, talks took place in Ankara on December 11, 2024, under the auspices of President Erdogan. The agreement reaffirmed Somalia's territorial integrity while providing a collaborative approach to meeting Ethiopia's sea access needs.

Furthermore, during Saturday's visit, the two leaders reiterated their commitment to the agreement, emphasizing the “spirit of friendship and solidarity.”

They also discussed plans to deepen trade relations and strengthen security cooperation, including in the fight against extremist militant groups in the region.

Although questions regarding Ethiopia's sea access remain unresolved, the restoration of diplomatic relations offers hope for a peaceful and cooperative future between the two nations.

New era in relations with Trkiye mediation efforts

President Mohamud's visit to Ethiopia marks his first official trip since Trkiye-brokered talks helped resolve long-standing disputes between the two countries. This visit builds on the recent agreement reached in Ankara. This renewed cooperation highlights a new era of collaboration between Somalia and Ethiopia, said a statement from the Somali presidency.

The dispute between Ethiopia and Somalia began in January 2024 when Ethiopia signed an agreement with Somaliland over the use of the Berberas port on the Red Sea.

Trkiye played a central role in mediating peace talks, which culminated with the Ankara Declaration last December, hosted by President Erdogan and attended by Somali and Ethiopian leaders.
