Carrie Johnson treated in hospital for 'nasty lung infection' after contracting flu and pneumonia
Carrie Johnson has pleaded with people to get a flu shot after spending almost a week in hospital with a chest infection that left her “struggling to breathe”.
The wife of the former prime minister Boris Johnson said she was still not recovered after contracting the flu and pneumonia.
Ms Johnson posted an image on Instagram showing herself in a hospital bed and added: “It might be a few more weeks before I feel like myself again.
“I didn't expect to spend the first week of 2025 in hospital. After having a nasty chest infection for almost 18 days at home over Christmas, it got out of control and I was having trouble breathing correctly.”
She also posted a tribute to NHS doctors and nurses at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxfordshiredescribing them as “the best people on Earth”.
“I can't thank them enough. When I was particularly depressed, a nurse even serenaded me by my bed. Incredible kindness,” she wrote.

Ms Johnson also admitted she “really, really wished” she had gotten the flu jab this year.
“It totally passed me by. No guarantees, but I most likely would not have spent the last 3 weeks horribly, horribly ill if I had had it,” she said.
“Obviously check with your doctor, but my advice is to get your flu shot.”
It's not clear when the photo was taken, but Ms. Johnson appears to have since left the hospital.

A second image, posted on her Instagram account, shows the gifts her children gave her to take them to the hospital. They include son Wilf's “favorite dinosaur toy”, called Greenie, and daughter Romy's princess keychain.
She ended her message with: “health and family are everything.”
As Prime Minister, Mr Johnson became seriously ill with COVID-19 in April 2020 and spent time in intensive care.
The couple's son was born later the same month and was Wilfred Lawrie Nicholas Johnsonpartly in tribute to two doctors, Nick Hart and Nick Price, who treated Mr Johnson.
