I believe Donald Trump | Notice

I believe Donald Trump | Notice

Twelve days into 2025, I've already broken what was my one and only New Year's resolution.

I vowed not to succumb to the easy temptation to write about insanity every time Donald Trump writes an insulting tweet or bombastic statement without, of course, using spell check.

My calculation was that after the President-elect of the United States was sworn in later this month, there would be ample opportunity to devote time and space to his manic meanderings.

Part of the selfish reason I promised myself I would try to avoid, if possible, having to examine the meaning and implications of Trump's characteristic spasms of absurdity was to protect myself briefly, at least from harm undeniable psychological damage that he caused to the world. the wounded psyche of the world.

Since announcing his candidacy for president in 2016, Trump has dominated our gaze and attention. Every depressing day since has been a cacophony of madness that has taken its toll on the mind, spirit and soul.

But escaping Trump has become impossible. Clothed in enormous power, he continues, uninhibited by truth or decency, to burnish his insatiable narcissism and ego, giving us a bitter taste of the carnival of chaos that looms on the not-so-distant horizon .

On Tuesday, Trump held a rambling news conference during his golden ode to himself at Mar-a-Lago in Florida.

Among the countless examples of Trump's stream-of-consciousness inanity were his musings on drip-drip, drip-drip from faucets and gas heaters.

[A] Gas heating is much cheaper, Trump said. It's much better heat and, as the expression goes, it doesn't itch. Does anyone have a heater where you go and scratch and that's what they want you to have.

Ladies and gentlemen, the scrambled synapses of the future President of the United States at work.

Ridicule aside, it would be a grave mistake to confuse Trump's stumbling inconsistency with a lack of ironclad conviction.

As I have written before and often, Trump is, in my opinion, a true fascist. Fascists don't brag. Fascists are not joking. Fascists are not joking.

Trump has a plan saturated with authoritarian means and rhetoric to achieve what he has described as a golden age where years of weakness will be replaced by a return to America's rightful greatness, the shocking sequel.

Trump has assembled an obedient administration to realize his grand ambitions for America with little, if any, resistance from a Republican-controlled Congress, the Supreme Court, or the prostrate billionaires who own large swaths of the media of companies who seek his good graces.

So when Trump insists again and again that he will use military force, if necessary, to impose American hegemony over Greenland and the Panama Canal, for vital national security reasons, I believe him.

Trump was asked if he could assure the world that as president he would not use economic or military coercion to achieve his territorial goals. His quick response was: No.

I believe this because, as history has confirmed, this is precisely what fascists are inclined to do.

As a Canadian, I also believe Trump when he warned that he would use America's unique economic power to force Canada into becoming the 51st state.

I didn't laugh. Instead, I shuddered when Trump was asked if he would consider using military force to annex and acquire Canada.

The question was as remarkable as Trump's response. No, economic strength, he said, because Canada and the United States would really be something.

Fascists do not float ideas involving the seizure of land, canals, or the annexation of sovereign nations. Once born, these ideas take tangible form and, inevitably, plans are made to bring them to fruition.

Accordingly, I do not view Trump's promised aggression, even against NATO allies, as a negotiating ploy or a familiar tool to divert attention, as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently suggested, the onerous costs of new presidents who proposed across-the-board tariffs on Canadian products. imported to the United States.

I am convinced that an emboldened Trump means making America's golden age a reality, damn international law, damn territorial integrity and damn Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty which states that an armed attack against one NATO member is an attack on all members.

It is time to finally abandon the vulgar reasoning that Trump jokes about when he makes outlandish comments, such as the possibility of declaring economic or other war in Greenland, Panama or Canada.

Look, Trump believes every fantastical word he says. Canadians, among others, must admit this and confront a fascist tyrant squarely, clearly and loudly.

A slew of federal politicians rushing to social media to post missives mocking Trump's hysterical plans won't be enough.

Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey understood what to say and how to say it.

[Trumps] the story was about creating chaos in an attempt, in a confusion with humor. But often these statements become political statements and become reality. So, in my opinion, treating this as a joke is not the right thing to do, Furey said.

Canada, he added, is a strong and sovereign country and it always will be.

Trump's threats to Canadian sovereignty were, the prime minister said, completely unacceptable.

Then Furey, to his credit, issued his own stern warning to Trump.

Sovereignty comes at an incredible price; it is the blood price paid by Canadians, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, and trying to remove it will be costly.

Listen, listen, sir. Listen, listen.
