In a major breakthrough, members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) negotiating team finally meet its incarcerated founder-president Imran Khan at Rawalpindi's Adiala Prison today (Sunday) , after a lot of noise.
The meeting was attended by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Omar Ayub, former Speaker of the National Assembly Asad Qaiser, the head of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) Sahibzada Hamid Raza and the Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM). leader of Senator Allama Raja Nasir Abbas.
The much-awaited meeting preceded by the hour-long one-on-one meeting between KP CM Gandapur and Khan is being held without PTI general secretary Salman Akram Raja and senior leader Hamid Khan, who are also among the negotiations of the former ruling party. The committee is currently in talks with the government, but they have not yet reached a settlement.
The meeting comes after an NA spokesperson said a telephone conversation took place between President Ayaz Sadiq and PTI's Ayub and Qaiser, during which the latter requested a meeting between the negotiating committee and Khan.
The spokesperson, however, added that the NA President only played the role of a messenger and the government should hold the said meeting organized by the PML-N-led government in light of the President's message of the AN.
Only those authorized to meet Khan whose names were provided to the prison administration indicated that the PTI negotiating committee would contact the speaker after the meeting, which would then be followed by the third round of talks between the two. sides.
The PTI will have to submit its written demands in the third session which is likely to be held on Monday or Tuesday, the sources in the President's office added.
The planned meeting, if materialized, will be a significant breakthrough in the seemingly stalled talks between the incumbent government and the PTI, as it has emerged as a major hurdle in convening the third round of talks.
The two sides held two negotiation sessions on December 27, 2024 and January 2, 2025, during which it was decided that the former ruling party would present its “charter of demands” in the next session after meeting its founder imprisoned. in Adiala prison for more than a year.
The talks, however, hit a roadblock due to the PTI's inability to meet Khan, which it said was necessary to consult the party stalwart regarding presenting his demands in writing.
The “pause” in the talks was attributed to National Assembly Speaker Sadiq's foreign visit to Prime Minister's Advisor on Political and Public Affairs Rana Sanaullah. However, the guardian of the lower house on Saturday threw the ball into the government's court, saying that the government and its allies had to decide on the issue and that he was not responsible for the meeting of the PTI delegation with the Deposed Prime Minister.
Speaking to Geo News, PTI negotiator Senator Abbas said he hoped the meeting would be held in an unmonitored environment.
“It is important to meet [Khan] now, and there should be a suitable place and time [for it]the lawmaker said, emphasizing that the group should at least be given enough time to sufficiently discuss the issues.
The party founded by Khan, which demanded the release of its founder and workers, the formation of a judicial commission into the events of the May 9 riots and the November 26 protests last year, has set 31 January the deadline to reach a “logical conclusion” in the negotiations between the government and the PTI, a deadline which the government has requested to be extended.
The PTI, which got Khan's approval to put its demands in writing and hold a third round of talks, warned that the talks would fail if a judicial commission to probe the events of May 9, 2023 and November 26 was not trained after the third session.
“A fourth round of negotiations is highly unlikely if the government does not accept our demand for a judicial commission,” said SIC chairman Raza, who is part of the PTI negotiating team.
The remarks mirror those of PTI chairman Barrister Gohar, who, quoting Khan, warned that talks could not progress further if party negotiators were not allowed to meet the incarcerated founder.
The party, while referring to the criticism leveled at it, also accused Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders Maryam Nawaz and Khawaja Asif of sabotaging the dialogue process.
In a video statement, senior PTI leader and former NA president Qaiser had said a day earlier that the duo was trying their best to make the negotiation process “unfruitful”.
Meanwhile, criticizing Khan's post on popular social media platform PTI to meet the ex-Prime Minister” and that this should be allowed to take place.
