Carrie Johnson advised her Instagram followers to get a flu shot after spending a week in the hospital with the flu and pneumonia. The wife of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson had a chest infection for 18 days over Christmas and says she was struggling to breathe properly before being admitted to hospital.
Johnson added that she regrets not getting the flu vaccine. I really, really wish I had done that. This totally escaped me this year. No guarantees, but I most likely would not have spent the last 3 weeks horribly, horribly sick if I had had it, she said.
There is a common misconception that the flu vaccine is only available to the elderly and vulnerable, but everyone in the UK is eligible to receive it.
The flu vaccine is a seasonal program available throughout the fall and winter. This year, the deadline to obtain it will be March 31, 2025.

The vaccine is offered on the NHS and is free for certain groups of people. You can get it for free if you:

- Have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more (severely overweight)
- Living in a retirement home
- You are the primary carer of an elderly or disabled person, or receive childcare allowance
- Living with someone with a weakened immune system
For those not eligible for a free vaccine, it is offered in a range of pharmacies and supermarkets, usually costing between £10 and £20. Superdrug charges £9.95 for those with a free Superdrug health and beauty card, or £19 .95 for non-members. It's also available from Asda for $13 or Tesco for $16. Just check to see if your local branch offers the service.
Are there any side effects?
Most people will feel fine after the flu shot, but it may cause mild short-term side effects, including pain in the arm where the shot was given, fever, fatigue, nausea and muscle pain. These symptoms usually disappear after a few days. The vaccine does not contain the live virus, so you cannot get the flu.
Who cannot get vaccinated?
Anyone who has ever had a serious allergic reaction to a previous dose of the flu vaccine.
Some flu vaccines used in the UK contain egg protein, so you should tell the person giving you the vaccine if you are allergic to eggs.
I already have a cold, can I get the vaccine?
If you have a sore throat, runny nose or mild cough, you can get vaccinated. But the NHS advises that if you have more serious symptoms like high fever, muscle aches or headaches, you should wait until they go away.
When will it start working?
The vaccine usually takes up to two weeks to become effective. You may still get the flu after getting vaccinated, but it will probably be shorter and milder. The protection it provides wanes over time, which is why the NHS recommends getting the vaccine every year.
