The Z-Morh tunnel project has not been without its challenges. In October 2023, a tragic militant attack on the construction site resulted in the loss of seven workers. Since then, security has been considerably increased. Ahead of the Prime Minister's visit, extensive security measures, including additional checkpoints and increased vigilance, were implemented to ensure the successful inauguration of this critical infrastructure.

The Z-Morh Tunnel is a crucial precursor to the Zojila Tunnel, currently under construction and poised to become the longest tunnel in Asia. Spanning 13.14 kilometers, the Zojila tunnel is being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 6,800 crore. It will cross the Himalayan range at Zojila Pass, connecting Ganderbal in Kashmir to Drass in Kargil.

Once completed, the Zojila Tunnel will reduce the travel time between Ganderbal and Kargil from three hours to just 20 minutes. The main features of this tunnel include:

• Four culverts with a total length of 810 meters.
• Four Nilgrar tunnels with a combined length of 4,821 meters.
• Three vertical ventilation shafts for optimal airflow and safety.

The Zojila Tunnel is strategically crucial to ensure smooth movement of goods and defense supplies to Ladakh, a region often isolated during winters due to the closure of the Zojila Pass. Construction of the tunnel began in 2012 under the supervision of the Border Roads Organization (BRO), with the project awarded to Tunnelways Limited. However, the project was later transferred to the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), which re-issued the tender to continue and complete the work.
