Lahore: Jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has said he is not Nawaz Sharif and will strike a deal with the military establishment to get out of jail.

Sharif, the three-time former prime minister, left Pakistan in self-imposed exile twice in the past – first after striking a deal with then-military ruler General Pervez Musharraf in early 2000, and with General Qamar Javed Bajwa, then army chief, in 2019.

“I want to make it clear that whatever tactics are used, I will not make any deal. I am not Nawaz Sharif seeking forgiveness for his billions earned through corruption. I have lived and will die in Pakistan… I will always defend my nation,” Khan said in a message on X on Wednesday.

Khan's remarks come amid ongoing talks between his Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) party and the military-backed Shehbaz Sharif government, during which it is speculated that he could be released from prison at the following the success of the talks.

Shehbaz Sharif is the younger brother of Nawaz Sharif.

Chastising the military establishment and the government for the “inhumane” treatment of his incarcerated party members, Khan said he would take the matter to international forums.

“Political prisoners in Pakistan are treated inhumanely. Our workers detained by the army have been subjected to severe mental and physical torture. I too have been subjected to extremely bad treatment. Several workers, including Sami Wazir , were brutally tortured.

“We demand that human rights organizations take action against these violations of law and human rights. We have filed petitions in the Supreme Court, the Lahore High Court and the Islamabad High Court, but we did not get a hearing,” Khan asserted, adding that PTI now has no choice but to raise its voice on international platforms.

“I will write to global human rights organizations to ensure that these innocent citizens are heard. I also urge overseas Pakistanis to raise their voices in this regard. In the process of crushing the PTI, the entire system has been violated,” he added.

Speaking about Pakistan's economic woes, Khan said: “The country's economy is at its worst. Foreign investment is at a historic low. The SIFC and Uraan programs failed miserably. Unemployment is increasing due to stagnant growth rates. Khan added that brilliant minds and investments are quickly leaving the country because no one trusts the stability of nations anymore. Pakistani companies are relocating their activities to Dubai.

The PTI chief also said that no economic stability can ever be achieved in a country where the rule of law does not exist. “Pakistan is buried under an economic crisis. There is no solution to this problem except through a government that enjoys public trust,” he said.

Khan has been in prison since August 2023 in several cases.
