India becoming a major maritime power, says PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a veiled reference to China's hegemonic activities at sea, on Wednesday asserted that India favors development and not expansion, while pleading for an open, secure, Indo-Pacific region. inclusive and prosperous.
Addressing a gathering at the commissioning ceremony of three frontline naval platforms INS Surat, INS Nilgiri and INS Vaghsheer at the Mumbai Naval Shipyard, Modi said: India operates in the spirit of development and not expansionism. Highlighting India's economic ties, Modi highlighted partnerships with the 10-nation ASEAN bloc, Australia, Gulf countries and African countries. India is today recognized as a reliable and responsible global partner, especially among the Global South, he said, adding that the country is emerging as a major maritime power.
Modi linked the commissioned platforms to India's maritime heritage and culture. He said that INS Nilgiri reflects the maritime prowess of the Chola dynasty, INS Surat evokes the era when Gujarats ports connected India with West Asia and INS Vaghsheer represents the sixth and final ship Kalvari class submarines.
Congratulating the armed forces for taking forward the Make-in-India initiative, Modi highlighted that India's defense production has crossed Rs 1.25 lakh crore and the country is now exporting defense equipment to over 100 countries. He noted that 60 large ships, worth Rs 1.5 lakh crore, are currently under construction in India.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh described the commissioning of INS Surat, INS Nilgiri and INS Vaghsheer as a historic milestone, demonstrating the growing strength of the Indian Navy and the growing importance of India in the Indian Ocean region.
