Trump says he discussed TikTok's 'balance' with China's Xi Jinping as platform faces US ban

New President Donald Trump said in a post to Truth Social he discussed TikTok's “balance” with Chinese President Xi Jinping in a phone call Friday.

Trump's message came just minutes before the Supreme Court on Friday rejected TikTok's appeal to overturn a ban on the social media platform set to take effect Jan. 19, just a day before the inauguration of Trump.

“This was a very good call, both for China and the United States,” Trump wrote.

“I expect that we will solve many problems together and starting now,” Trump added. “We discussed trade balance, Fentanyl, TikTok and many other topics. President Xi and I will do everything possible to make the world more peaceful and safer!”

The president-elect said CNN anchor Pamela Brown in response to Friday's court ruling that the ban “ultimately comes down to me, so you'll see what I'm going to do.”

“Congress gave me the decision, so I will make the decision,” he added.

Certainly, American presidents do not have the power to overturn Supreme Court decisions. But as Yahoo Finance's Alexis Keenan reported, Trump may try to push Congress to repeal the law or delay its taking effect.

The AP reported Friday that President Biden does not plan to enforce the ban on TikTok.

Trump promised on the campaign trail to “save” TikTok from a U.S. ban put in place by an April law signed by Biden. The law states that TikTok, which is owned by Chinese company ByteDance, must be sold to a US owner or be barred from operating in the country, citing national security concerns.

Trump's pro-TikTok rhetoric is a reversal from his stance during his first term as president, during which he made a decree attempting to ban the platform.

His potential strategies to save the social media platform are not guaranteed to succeed. A viable solution could be found in the hands of Trump ally Elon Musk, whose own social media company X could buy TikTok from ByteDance.

Trump's talks on “balancing” trade with Xi also follow mixed messages over his plans to impose new tariffs on Chinese goods.

Trump said during his campaign that he planned to impose tariffs of 60% or more on Chinese imports, but a more recent article on Truth Social from the new president said he would pass tariffs additional less severe 10% on existing duties on Chinese products.
