Jan. 17 (UPI) — President-elect Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping discussed a series of issues in a phone call Friday.

Trump said the phone call was positive after the two leaders frequently butted heads during the president-elect's first term, leading to a trade war between the world's two largest economies.

“It was a very good call, both for China and for the United States,” Trump said. in a brief statement on his Truth Social account. “I expect that we will solve many problems and many other issues together. President Xi and I will do everything possible to make the world more peaceful and secure.”

In a report of the Chinese Foreign Ministry telephone conversation, Xi congratulated Trump on his election and stressed the importance of communication between the two to improve relations.

“President Xi expressed his willingness to further advance China-US relations from a new starting point,” the statement said. A Chinese statement said. “President Xi emphasized that the two great nations, China and the United States, are pursuing each other's dreams and are both determined to provide a better life for their people.”

The statement said the United States must approach the “Taiwan question” with “caution” as well as “sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

The Biden administration and Chinese leaders are at odds over Taiwan, whose outgoing president at one point said the United States would use military force if China attacked it, and over navigation rights in the Sea of Southern China.
