Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife convicted in Al-Qadir corruption case – JURIST

The Islamabad court of Pakistan's National Accountability Bureau on Friday sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, to prison terms of 14 and seven years respectively, in a 190 million corruption case euros. The court had earlier delayed the verdict amid ongoing negotiations between Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-I-Insaaf (PTI) party and Pakistan's ruling coalition government.

Khan was sentenced to 14 years in prison and fined PKR$1 million, while Bibi was sentenced to seven years in prison and fined PKR$500,000. The couple faces additional jail time if the fines are not paid. Furthermore, the court ordered the confiscation of the assets of the Al-Qadir University Project Trust to the federal government and handed over the convicts to the prison authorities.

Imran Khan, in his message from Adiala Prison, rejecting the Al-Qadir Trust case verdict as politically motivated and predetermined, vowed to continue his struggle for democracy, freedom and the State of right without compromise. He criticized the judicial system for bias, saying judges were rewarded for rulings against him, and compared its integrity to the alleged corruption of another former prime minister, Nawaz Sharif.

Furthermore, defending Al-Qadir University as a charitable institution, he insisted that neither he nor Bushra Bibi benefited financially from it and condemned the government for targeting his wife to put pressure on him. He also denounced the lack of progress in negotiations to create a judicial commission to investigate political events, accusing the government of dishonesty and undermining accountability.

The 190 million Al-Qadir Trust case involves allegations of corruption and abuse of power by Khan, businessman Malik Riaz and others. In 2019, Malik Riaz's 190 million assets, seized by the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA), were returned to Pakistan after Khan's government approved a confidential deal with the NCA. The Al-Qadir Trust, subsequently established, is said to have received land from Riaz to establish an educational institution, accused of illegally benefiting from manipulated funds.

Khan remains in prison due to his conviction in several cases, including the “cipher case”, which involved “the use of official secret information and the illegal retention of an encrypted telegram with bad faith intent”, and a marriage law violation case alleging that Khan and his wife had violated Islamic law, which says a woman must wait three months before remarrying.
