Imran Khan 'laughed' upon hearing 190 million case verdict: Aleema Khan

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan laughed when he heard the verdict against him in the 190 million corruption case, his sister Aleema Khan said on Saturday.

Speaking to the media outside a court in Lahore, she said: “When the PTI founder heard the verdict, he laughed. We have entrusted our matter to Allah,” Geo News reported.

An accountability court on Friday convicted Imran and his wife Bushra Bibi in the 190 million or Al-Qadir Trust case, sentencing the deposed prime minister to 14 years in prison.

Imran, 72, has been detained since August 2023 and charged with around 200 cases, but his party says the latest conviction was used to pressure him to retire from politics.

The conviction comes a day after PTI leaders met the government again for talks aimed at easing political tensions. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan also met Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir recently.

“I will not make any agreement or seek any relief,” the cricketer-turned-politician told reporters in the courtroom after his sentencing.

The anti-corruption court met in Adiala prison where Imran is being held and convicted the couple of corruption linked to the Al-Qadir Trust, a social foundation they established.

“The prosecution has proven its case. Imran is found guilty,” said Justice Nasir Javed Rana, announcing a prison sentence of 14 years for the PTI founder and seven years for Bushra.

While speaking to reporters, Aleema said the current system needed rectification, emphasizing that the 190 million people were in the custody of the government and not Imran.

She said the former prime minister also wanted the judge to announce the verdict as soon as possible because he wanted to challenge it in a higher court. “Once this case reaches the High Court, the verdict will be set aside.”

Imran claims that all cases against him are politically motivated and designed to prevent him from returning to power.

He has been convicted four times since his arrest, with two convictions overturned and the sentences in the other two cases suspended.

He remained in prison in the Al-Qadir Trust case, the oldest case against him, and on other charges related to inciting protests.

Federal Minister for Information Ataullah Tarar, on his part, said that the conviction of former Prime Minister Imran in the 190 million corruption case was based on merit and was an “open and open case”. close”.
