Trump likely to visit India, China within 100 days of presidency: report

NEW DELHI: US President-elect Donald Trump plans to visit India and China after assuming his second term in the Oval Office.
According to a Wall Street Journal report, Trump has expressed interest in visiting China during his first 100 days in office, as part of his efforts to deepen relations with Beijing.

“President-elect Donald Trump has told advisers he wants to visit China after taking office, according to people familiar with the discussions, in an effort to deepen relations with Xi Jinping, strained by the president's threat elected to impose higher tariffs on Chinese imports,” the Wall Street Journal reported.
“Trump also discussed with advisors a possible trip to India, according to those close to him,” specifies the financial daily. According to sources familiar, a preliminary level of talks was initiated when Foreign Minister S Jaishankar visited Washington DC around Christmas last month.
The visit could take place as early as April or in the fall of this year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also expected to be invited by Trump to a White House meeting this spring.
This comes a day after Trump spoke on the phone with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Xi delegated Vice President Han Zheng to attend Trump's inauguration ceremony, the first time a senior Chinese official will be present at a US presidential inauguration. Foreign Minister S Jaishankar would represent India at the inaugural ceremony.
Trump invited Xi to his inauguration, but the Chinese leader never attends the swearing-in of foreign leaders. After the talks, Trump said he had a “very good” phone conversation with Xi.
“I just spoke to Chinese President Xi Jinping,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “I expect that we will solve many problems together and now.” Trump said the two discussed trade, fentanyl, TikTok and other topics, and claimed the call was “very good” for both countries.
