Jokowi visits biosaline rice development site on the coast of Semarang city
SEMARANG, Lingkarjateng.id – The seventh President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo (Jokowi), visited the biosaline rice variety development site in Mangunharjo Village, Tugu District, Semarang City, Saturday, January 18, 2025.
During the visit, Jokowi witnessed the planting of the Biosalin rice variety which was recently inaugurated by the Mayor of Semarang, Hevearita Gunaryanti Rahayu, the result of collaboration with BRIN, BRIDA, academics, economic actors and local communities.
Aside from that, Jokowi also looked at the success of brackish land management in Semarang City using seawater desalination technology.
The coastal area of Semarang City itself faces a number of challenges ranging from seawater infiltration or intrusion onto land, abrasion, land conversion and to poverty.
Data from the Water Resources and Mineral Energy Management Service of Central Java Province shows that the intrusion into the coastal area of Semarang City has reached 5 kilometers inland.
Regarding abrasion, satellite image studies show that the city of Semarang loses on average 1 meter of coastline each year.
Apart from this, data from the local Central Statistics Agency (BPS) indicates that agricultural land in Semarang city has decreased by 10 percent over the past decade.
Poverty in Semarang city is influenced by a decrease in fish catches, poor harvests and damage to infrastructure.
To address a number of these challenges, Semarang Municipality (Pemkot) is desalinating seawater using reverse osmosis technology. This technology converts seawater into fresh water for irrigation and community drinking water needs.
Apart from this, Semarang Municipality is also developing biosaline rice varieties that can survive and grow optimally in salt-rich land.
The success of biosaline rice development was also felt by the farmers of Mangunharjo village. The first harvest of biosaline rice 1 and 2 in October 2024 has increased yields and income for local farmers.
However, the development of biosaline rice requires an innovative financing system to reduce the operational costs of desalination technology. Therefore, the Semarang City Government is collaborating with BRIN to create sustainable rice seeds with a massive and systematic planting model so that seed prices are affordable.
Apart from this, the application of biosaline technology also continues to pay attention to the impact on the environment and coastal ecosystems, so regular studies and monitoring are necessary.
