Is TikTok coming back? TikTok says it's 'restoring service'; Donald Trump promises a decree for an application
TikTok announced Sunday that it was “reinstating its services” after a ban in the United States began taking effect earlier in the day.
“In agreement with our service providers, TikTok is in the process of restoring service. We thank President Trump for providing necessary clarity and assurance to our service providers that they will not be subject to any penalty by bringing TikTok to more than 170 million Americans and enabling more than 7 million Americans' small businesses to thrive,” the company said in a statement. “This is a strong stance in support of the First Amendment and against arbitrary censorship. We will work with President Trump on a long-term solution that keeps TikTok in the United States.”
When users returned to the app on Sunday, they were greeted with a message saying: “Welcome! Thank you for your patience and support. Thanks to the efforts of President Trump, TikTok is back in the United States! You can continue to create, share and discover all the things you love on TikTok.
This comes after TikTok briefly went dark between Saturday evening and early Sunday.
Last spring, Congress passed a measure with overwhelming bipartisan support giving TikTok a 270-day deadline to sever ties with China-based parent company ByteDance or face a ban in the United States. Instead of launching a sale, TikTok filed a lawsuit on First Amendment grounds that ended in defeat at the Supreme Court on Friday.
The unanimous decision by the country's highest court found merit in national security concerns about the potential collection of user data or manipulation of content that the Chinese government might undertake.
The platform became unavailable for some users on Saturday evening, with a pop-up message in the app saying: “Sorry, TikTok is not available at the moment.” »

“A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the United States. Unfortunately, this means you cannot use TikTok at this time,” the post continues. “We're fortunate that President Trump has indicated he will work with us on a solution to restore TikTok once he takes office. Stay tuned!”
On Sunday morning, app stores run by Apple, Google and Samsung began removing the app.
The Biden administration said earlier this week that it would not enforce the ban on Sunday, leaving implementation of the measure to President-elect Donald Trump, who takes office on Monday. Trump has pledged to overturn the ban.
In a Truth Social article published Sunday morning, Trump said he is “asking companies not to let TikTok stay in the dark!” He said he would issue an executive order on Monday, his first day in office, “to extend the period before legislative bans take effect, so we can reach an agreement to protect our national security.”

“The order will also confirm that there will be no liability for any company that helped prevent TikTok from going dark before my order,” he added.
Trump said he wanted “the United States to have a 50% stake in a joint venture.” He said it could be a joint venture between the current owners and the new owners.
Earlier Sunday, a Biden administration official accused TikTok of trying to “shift blame” onto the Biden administration, saying that “they've had a year to deal with it and we've made it clear that we don't “We wouldn't implement it on our last day.”
White House officials have stressed for days that if TikTok became unavailable on Sunday, it would not be because of actions taken by the United States: it would be TikTok's decision, and that the administration was only returning the question to Trump because of the timing.
