Delhi Assembly polls: Arvind Kejriwal writes to PM, seeks support for accommodation for sanitation workers on EMI
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national in-charge Arvind Kejriwal on Friday presented a proposal to provide accommodation to government employees on monthly instalments. According to the AAP chief, the scheme will now cover other government employees as well.
Speaking at a press conference, Kejriwal said he had also written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting him to provide land to the Delhi government for construction of housing for government employees. As per the constitutional framework, the national capital grounds come under the control of the Centre.
“I wish to draw your attention to a very important matter regarding sanitation workers employed in NDMC and MCD areas. These workers are the backbone of the cleanliness system of our city. During their service, they reside in accommodation provided However, after retirement, they are forced to leave these homes. They cannot buy their own accommodation or pay the high rents in Delhi, which leaves them and their families in a precarious situation. , said Arvind Kejriwal.
“Since land matters in Delhi fall under the jurisdiction of the central government, I request that the central government provide land to sanitation workers at concessional rates. The Delhi government can construct houses on this land for them , and workers can repay the cost of these houses to the government in easy installments,” Kejriwal said.
Kejriwal further added that the Delhi government's program can be started with sanitation workers and then extended to all government employees.
The Prime Minister is yet to respond to Arvind Kejriwal's proposal.
Earlier, on January 17, Kejriwal also wrote a letter to Prime Minister Modi, offering to provide metro rides to students in Delhi. at half the regular price. In his letter to Prime Minister Modi, Arvind Kejriwal also proposed that the subsidy provided to students should be borne equally by the Delhi government and the central government.
Arvind Kejriwal's letter to Prime Minister Modi came just weeks before the Delhi Assembly elections. The AAP is eyeing a third term in Delhi after winning the Assembly elections.
Elections to the Delhi Legislative Assembly are scheduled for February 5 and counting of votes will take place on February 8.
