Hospital funding announcement next week, BBC says

The BBC understands the government will make an announcement on hospital funding next week.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced in July that a review would be carried out into plans for hospitals, roads and rail as part of an attempt to plug a 22 billion hole in public finances.

This includes hundreds of millions of pounds previously pledged to hospitals across London, including St Helier Hospital in Sutton.

A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said the government planned to “build back our NHS”.

St Helier Hospital had been told it would get new buildings as well as upgrades to existing buildings, but staff said this was yet to happen.

The hospital, which opened its doors to patients in 1941, has been the subject of funding pledges under several governments.

In 2003, Tony Blair's Labor Party announced a plan called Better healthcare closer to home.

In 2010, the Conservative George Osborne pledged €200 million to finance new hospital programsnotably at St Hélier hospital.

In 2020, Boris Johnson's government promised up to €500 million to St Helier as part of the new hospitals programme.

Then in 2023, the BBC reported ministers aimed to have six hospitals ready for 2025 – the one that was St Helier, part of the Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Dr Beccy Suckling, the hospital's chief medical officer, said the building had a range of problems, including windows which did not close properly, leading to damp.

She said more than 600 operations had to be canceled last year due to ventilation difficulties in theaters.

Dr Suckling believes the age of the building, completed in 1942, is to blame for the problems.

Dr Pauline Swift, consultant nephrologist at St Helier Hospital, said lifts often break down, creating more problems for patients.

She also said she went to see a patient in a dialysis unit and the windows were closed because they were out.

She added: “This is not a way to care for patients in the 21st century. »

The DHSC agreed that NHS buildings and equipment “have been left in disrepair”, disrupting care and hampering staff.

After coming to power, the Labor Party said it would examine the feasibility of the future of 25 projects forming part of the New hospital program in England, as Conservative Boris Johnson promised when he was Prime Minister.

The DHSC said: “We inherited a new hospital program that was unrealistic and unaffordable, with funding set to expire in March 2025.

“We are working on an affordable and honest schedule.”
