New Delhi, January 20: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated Republican Party member Donald Trump on his return to the White House for a historic second term. Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States during a program held in the Capitol Rotunda.
Speaking to X, PM Modi wrote: Congratulations, my dear friend President @realDonaldTrump on your historic inauguration as the 47th President of the United States! I look forward to working closely together again, for the benefit of our two countries and to shape a better future for the world. Best wishes for a successful term.”
Trump was sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts.
Outgoing President Joe Biden and Trump traveled together to the US Capitol for the latter's swearing-in program after a traditional White House tea ceremony accompanied by their wives, Kamala Harris and his successor JD Vance and their spouses.
Jill Biden and Melania Trump traveled to the Capitol together in a separate car, as did Kamala Harris and her successor JD Vance.
This is only the second time the swearing-in has taken place indoors – the last time being in 1985, when President Ronald Reagan was sworn in for his second term.
Earlier, Biden welcomed Trump to the White House for a traditional tea ceremony with two words: Welcome home, according to media reports.
Guests at the swearing-in had begun to arrive at the Capitol rotunda where the ceremony took place; indoors instead of the traditional outdoor location.
This was only the second time the swearing-in had taken place indoors; the last time was in 1985, when President Ronald Reagan was sworn in for his second term.
Trump's return to the White House is also only the second time a US president has served two non-consecutive terms. The first was Grover Cleveland at the end of the 19th century.
The swearing-in took place in the presence of Trump's cabinet nominees, such as Marco Rubio, secretary of state, who is expected to be the first to be confirmed, as early as Monday.
Trump began inauguration proceedings Monday by attending a private service at St Johns Church with new first lady Melania Trump, JD Vance and his wife Usha Vance and some cabinet members.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Tim Cook of Apple, Elon Musk of Tesla and Space X and Sundar Pichai of Google also attended the swearing-in ceremony.
Former President Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary Clinton, former President George W Bush and his wife Laura Bush, and former President Barack Obama without his wife Michelle Obama attended the swearing-in ceremony, as c t's tradition, which was broken by President Trump skipping Biden's 2021 inauguration.
