As negotiations between the government and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) hit a new hurdle, former Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan has issued a seven-day ultimatum for the formation of a commission judicial on May 9 and November 26. incidents.
According to details, the federal government has finalized its response to the PTI's charter of demands. In response, the government reportedly intends to refuse one of the opposition party's two critical demands, namely the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the May 9 incidents.
Reacting to the reports, PTI founder Khan gave the government seven days to form the committee to continue the ongoing dialogue process, party chief lawyer Gohar Ali Khan said, as he s was speaking to a journalist outside Adiala prison in Rawalpindi.
On Monday, it was reported that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led government had prepared responses to the PTI's demands, which were finally handed over in writing to the government ahead of the third round of talks last week .
The government raised objections to the demands, according to reports, adding that the reason behind its refusal to form a judicial commission on May 9 was because the matter was sub-judice.
A judicial commission can only be formed in cases that are not pending in court, according to news sources. They added that in the May 9 case, several cases related to the violence were being heard in different courts, while some accused were also tried in military courts.
Referring to another PTI demand, the government will seek the names and details of party members who were “missing” and allegedly arrested in connection with the November 26 protests. “How can steps be taken for their release without their names and other relevant information? reports cite sources interviewed in response to the request.
In the government's response, reports add, the PTI will also be asked to provide details of alleged deaths that occurred during the crackdown on November 26 protesters in Islamabad.
The response to PTI's demands will be handed over to National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq in a few days, after which he will convene the fourth meeting between the government and opposition negotiating committees, according to reports.
Amid these reports, Gohar on Tuesday urged the government not to delay the ongoing negotiations.
Referring to a statement by the government's negotiating committee spokesperson, Senator Irfan Siddiqui, who disapproved of the PTI's meeting with top military leaders. “Negotiations cannot be conducted simultaneously through several channels,” he declared.
Siddiqui's remarks come after Gohar confirmed a “positive and direct” meeting between him, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister (CM) Ali Amin Gandapur, and Chief of Army Staff Army (COAS) where they “presented all questions and requests directly to General Asim Munir”.
The incarcerated former prime minister had also confirmed to journalists a few days ago about the meeting, mentioning that his party had been trying to bring the other side to the negotiating table for a long time.
However, the PTI chief clarified that their meeting [with the army chief] took place on the law and order situation, therefore, no one should create any problem regarding this.
“We want to continue the dialogue with the government, however, we have the condition that a judicial commission be formed,” Gohar announced categorically to clarify the PTI's position after holding three rounds of talks with government members.
He said the incarcerated PTI founder had told them not to hold the fourth meeting if a committee was not constituted within seven days, and added that his party expected progress from the government in this regard.
The PTI MP said the negotiations would be meaningless if the government failed to respond to the opposition's demand for the establishment of a commission.
It is worth mentioning that this development comes days after the PTI, following the approval of party founder Imran Khan, submitted its demands in writing to the government. Earlier, negotiations between the two sides had hit a roadblock due to the government's insistence and PTI's reluctance to do so.
The PTI's first demand to move the negotiations forward is the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the incidents of May 9 and November 26 that gave rise to widespread violent protests, leading to a crackdown on its supporters and supporters. leaders across the country.
Other demands from the former ruling party include the release of imprisoned political prisoners and the uncovering of the facts surrounding the alleged deaths of party activists at the hands of law enforcement during the protests.
