Donald Trump and Melania Meme's Crypto Tokens Crash

Cryptocurrencies affiliated with President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump fell in the first hours after Trump was sworn in on Monday.

“Official Trump,” a recently launched crypto token, plunged more than 20% in value over a 24-hour period ending Tuesday morning, according to crypto tracking site CoinGecko. After the drop, the official Trump stood at $38.

The Trump coin's decline reverses some of the gains made during an initial surge after it hit crypto markets last week. The coin's price rose from around $10 on Saturday morning to a high of around $74.59 before beginning to decline.

“Melania Meme,” which also launched last week, lost value by more than half over a 24-hour period ending Tuesday morning, according to CoinGecko data. The price of the Melania Meme was $4.19 as of Tuesday morning.

The recent decline in coins associated with Trump and Melania coincided with a slight decline in Bitcoin, the world's largest cryptocurrency. In early trading on Tuesday, bitcoin fell nearly a percentage point, putting its price at $102,853.

Many digital assets have risen since Trump won the November election, indicating investor enthusiasm over statements Trump made in support of cryptocurrency.

In July, Trump told audiences at a cryptocurrency conference in Nashville, Tennessee, that he wanted to make the United States the “cryptocurrency capital of the world.”

Trump also promised to ease regulations on the sector and create the federal government's first National Strategic Bitcoin Reserve.

Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Gary Gensler officially resigned from his position on Monday, marking a long-sought departure by some crypto proponents who viewed Gensler as too restrictive on digital assets.

It was reported that Trump would sign an executive action that would prioritize cryptocurrency policy. However, no such order was among the dozens of actions Trump signed Monday.
