Ski resort fire raises security questions in Türkiye DW 01/22/2025
Turkey observes a day of mourning after the death of 76 people in the fire which ravaged a luxury ski resort in the north of the country. More than 30 of the 51 people injured were still hospitalized, including one in intensive care.
More than 20 victims had not yet been identified as of Wednesday afternoon.
238 guests were staying at the hotel when the fire broke out around 3:30 a.m. local time (01:30 a.m. CET).
In the neighboring town of Bolu, eight members of the same family were buried. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who attended the funeral, could be seen wiping away tears.
Security measures involved
Many survivors told Turkish media there were no alarms warning them of the fire, no fire doors or any safe way for people to exit the hotel. They also reported that there were no fire extinguishers and that the firefighters took too long to arrive.
Some panicked guests tried to climb out of windows using the sheets as ropes.
Questions have mounted over fire safety measures at the 12-story mountaintop Grand Kartal Hotel in the resort town of Kartalkaya.
Claims that negligence played a role sparked growing anger across the country as grieving families began to bury their dead.
Arrests made
“There is no excuse for such a high number of deaths in 2025,” Ozgur Ozel, leader of the main opposition CHP party, said outside the hotel.
Tourism Minister Nuri Ersoy said on Tuesday that the hotel had passed an inspection last year and had two emergency exits, saying “no problems related to fire safety had been reported by the firefighters.”
According to AFP, citing a government source, nine people were arrested, including the hotel owner, its general manager, its director and its chief electrician.
The hotel, one of Turkey's most expensive ski resorts, had a prestigious clientele including executives, entrepreneurs and renowned doctors, many of whom were there with their children and family members.
