Sharif government in tough situation as Imran Khan's PTI withdraws from talks after 3 rounds

The party's announcement comes shortly after it was confirmed that the fourth round of talks between the two sides would take place on January 28.

Pakistan's ruling regime has urged former Prime Minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to continue dialogue after the opposition party withdrew from the third round of talks. The PTI insisted that it was not willing to sit down with the government until the formation of the judicial commission, Dawn reported.

The party's announcement came shortly after it was confirmed that the fourth round of negotiations between the two sides would take place on January 28. So far, three rounds of negotiations have taken place between the PTI and the government. In the second round, Imran Khan's party submitted written demands to the ruling regime. The government ultimately asked for seven days to respond to the letter.

No commissions, no negotiations, PTI leader Omar Ayub wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. At a press conference on Thursday, Ayub reiterated that the PTI would not participate in the negotiations until a commission was formed by the government to investigate the events of May 9 and November 26.

The government expresses its openness

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's administration adopted a conciliatory tone and asked the PTI to continue participating in the negotiations. Speaking on the matter, Senator Irfan Siddiqui, spokesperson for the government's negotiating committee, said it would present a written response to the opposition party's “charter of demands” by January 28 .

We (government) have promised PTI to submit our response to the dialogue committee within seven working days and hence we will definitely submit our responses on January 28, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML) senator told Dawn on Thursday -N). .

The ruling camp's remarks came after the PML-N and its allies held a meeting regarding the PTI's demands. Asked about PTI's refusal to attend the meeting until the judicial committee is formed, the Pakistani lawmaker maintained an optimistic stance on the issue.

They (PTI) will definitely participate in the next meeting, and they should do so, because the dialogue was initiated by them, when they first formed their negotiating committee, the senator said about the dialogue aimed at defuse political tensions.

He assured that negotiations were underway on the PTI's demands regarding the formation of the committees, adding that the government had not taken any decision on the matter so far. He said the PTI's decision to skip the next meeting would be considered “illogical” since the government remained open to negotiation.

We want them not to leave the dialogue process incomplete and to sit (with the government) without any conditions, he noted. We will give a befitting response to the demands of the PTI (and) in the same manner as the opposition party presented its demands, the senator added. He mentioned that the government asked National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, who is heading the negotiating committee, to convene the fourth meeting of the committee on January 28 or any other date only after obtaining the consent of the PTI, Dawn reported.

The main demands of Imran Khan's party are the formation of judicial commissions on May 9, 2023 and November 26, 2024, violent protests across the country and the release of all PTI prisoners. Meanwhile, another PML-N leader Khurram Dastagir Khan made it clear that the ruling regime would not compromise on the May 9 riots.

The dialogue between the government committee and the PTI resumed in December last year, after a long impasse. Initially, the PTI was not willing to share its demands in writing, but after getting a nod from Imran Khan, the party shared its demands in writing.
