Jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday asked his party to end ongoing negotiations with the government following its failure to form a judicial commission within the seven-day deadline.

The government and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) launched talks last month to end political instability. The two sides held three rounds of negotiations. In the final round, on January 16, Khan's party handed over a charter of demands to the government team for acceptance within seven days.

One of the main demands is the formation of judicial commissions to prove the events of May 9, 2023 and November 26, 2024. The government said the next meeting should take place on January 28, when it will officially respond to the ” demands the PTI.

However, PTI Chairman Gohar Khan told reporters after a prison meeting with Khan that the party founder had decided to suspend negotiations because the government had not formed the two committees.

“The government promised to form a commission within seven days, but failed to fulfill its promises,” Gohar said. The PTI founder categorically announced that no further round of negotiations would take place. The government's inability to honor its commitments leaves no reason to continue negotiations. Earlier, Opposition Leader Omar Ayub Khan also warned that further negotiations would be futile without concrete steps on the commissions.

Khan has been in prison since August 2023, but his party leaders meet with him regularly to discuss the legal proceedings against him and the current political situation.

Formation of committees within seven days was the main demand of the PTI negotiating team. It also demanded that judicial commissions be composed of three senior judges from the Supreme Court or high courts, and that proceedings be open to the public and the media.

Rana Sanaullah, an aide to the prime minister and a member of the negotiating team, criticized the PTI's rigidity. The negotiations are not a decree, he said.

Senator Irfan Siddiqui, another member of the official team and spokesperson of the government's negotiating committee, said the government had promised to meet the PTI's demands.

We will present our response to the dialogue commission within seven working days and we will submit our responses on January 28. Responding to a question on the PTI's refusal to attend the next meeting until the committees are formed, the senator expressed confidence that the opposition party would continue the dialogue.

They (PTI) will definitely join the next meeting, and they should do so, because they are the ones who started the dialogue, Siddiqui said.

However, in a WhatsApp message to reporters, the PTI said the talks were over.
