Shafaq News / Two lawmakers from Turkey's pro-Kurdish People's Democratic Party (HDP) visited Abdullah Calan, the imprisoned leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), on Imrali Island on Wednesday.
This meeting, which marks the second visit since December 28, 2024, comes in the context of Calan's continued involvement in the peace negotiations initiated by Ankara. The lawmakers said in a joint statement: “Calan is in ongoing negotiations, and once preparations are complete, the necessary declarations will be made,” adding: “This process will allow everyone, including ourselves, to live together in complete freedom.
Calan, imprisoned since 1999, continues to exert significant influence on Kurdish political dynamics. His engagement with Turkish political leaders and the HDP signals a potential shift toward resolving the long-standing Kurdish question through dialogue. After a meeting in December, Calan underlined his commitment to the peace initiative, saying: “I have the capacity and willingness to make the necessary positive contribution to Erdogan and Bahceli's call for dialogue, because it is an era of peace, democracy and fraternity for Turkey and the region.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoan welcomed “significant progress” in dialogue with the PKK, highlighting the potential for peace as Turkey works to resolve internal tensions and regional instability.
The conflict between Turkey and the PKK, which began in the early 1980s, caused deep divisions. The PKK, founded by Abdullah Calan, initially sought to create an independent Kurdish state within Turkey, which led to decades of violence.
