Imran Khan calls off negotiations with Pakistani government on judicial commissions after ultimatum expires
The call was made by Imran on Thursday after the expiration of the seven-day ultimatum that Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf had given to the government to accede to key demands.
Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has called off negotiations with the government over the creation of judicial commissions to investigate violence against anti-government protesters. The call was made by Imran on Thursday after the expiration of the seven-day ultimatum that Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf had given to the government to accede to key demands. His decision is seen as a step backwards in attempts to cool the country's already high political temperature, which worsened after his corruption conviction and subsequent instability in Pakistan's leadership and politics.
Last year, negotiations began between Khan's PTI and the Pakistani government aimed at easing high political tension in the country. The talks gained momentum following Khan's legal troubles, including after a court decided to sentence him to 14 years in prison on January 19, 2025, in a land corruption case.
This case concerns land allegedly given to a social institution created by Khan and his wife in exchange for illegal favors from a real estate tycoon. The land bribery case is one of the most significant corruption charges Khan faces, and it has been a focal point of his ongoing legal battles.
Negotiations focused on two key PTI demands: the creation of two judicial commissions to investigate violent protest rallies involving Khan's supporters. The first protest took place on May 9, 2023, when PTI supporters clashed with military offices and installations following Khan's arrest.
The second protest took place in November 2024, when Khan's supporters rioted again demanding his release. The government says four soldiers died during the November protests, while the PTI reports that 12 of its supporters were killed.
The failure of the negotiations
The PTI had issued a seven-day ultimatum to the government on January 16, 2025 for the creation of these two judicial commissions. As the deadline passed without any news from the government, Imran Khan, behind bars, decided to end the negotiations. Gohar Khan, PTI president, confirmed the development, saying he was disappointed with the government's inability to respond to the party's demands.

“Khan made it clear that if the formation of the committees was not announced within this time, then negotiations would not continue,” Gohar Khan said in a statement outside Adiala Prison in Rawalpindi, where Imran Khan is incarcerated Since. August 2023. He further expressed his regret at the lack of response from the government, stressing that this delay had led to the decision to cancel the negotiations.
The failure of the negotiations only worsens the already fragile political climate in Pakistan. Khan's ouster in 2022, which was accompanied by violent protests from his supporters, fueled a political crisis that has spread widespread unrest across the country. Calls for justice through judicial commissions are part of PTI's efforts to hold the government accountable for the violence and arrests that followed Khan's ouster.
Khan's arrest and continued detention brought an aura of political gloom to Pakistan. He accused all the cases against him of being politically motivated and even leveled the same accusation against the former prime minister and the PTI.
Pakistan's economy is also bearing the brunt, as it struggles to recover thanks to the IMF's $7 billion bailout and a slow economic recovery.
Irfan Siddiqui, spokesperson for the government's negotiating committee, had said on January 22 that the government would respond to the PTI's written demands on January 28, 2025.
