Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Thursday (January 23), US President Donald Trump delivered a strong criticism of China, then softened to combine it with a pledge to seek help from Chinese President Xi Jinping to negotiate peace between Russia and Ukraine.
Trump takes blows in China
Trump was responding to a question from WEF Chairman Brge Brende about the future of US-China relations. Brende had said: “We know you called President Xi Jinping last Friday. We heard you had a good chat.
To this, Trump quickly responded by saying, “He [Xi] called me. ” The remark, delivered with a pointed tone, seemed to signal China and Xi's eagerness to maintain good relations with Washington despite their difficult position on the world stage.
Trump took another swipe at China, accusing it of its trade practices and exploiting the U.S. economy. “We had massive deficits with China[…]It’s ridiculous, and it’s just an unfair relationship,” he said. He called for a “fair” trade record, promising that his administration would no longer tolerate what he described as unilateral deals.
But perhaps the most obvious blow was when the US president brought up China's link to Covid. “We [Xi and Trump] always had a very good relationship. He was very tense with Covid coming out of Wuhan. Obviously this strained him. I’m sure that strained him and a lot of people,” he said.
Openings for cooperation
But despite these pointed comments, Trump seemed willing to interact with Xi to fulfill a promise he has fallen behind on: ending the Russia-Ukraine war.
Trump repeatedly pledged during his presidential campaign to end the war on the first day of his administration. Obviously that didn't happen.
Now the Republican wants to work with Xi to talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin and end the conflict. Trump claimed to have raised the issue during his recent telephone conversation with Xi and suggested that China, given its influence, could play a central role in de-escalating the conflict.
“I hope China can help us stop the war with, in particular, Russia-Ukraine,” Trump said. They have a lot of power over this situation and work well with them.
Trump also addressed nuclear disarmament, saying Putin and Xi had expressed interest in reducing their nuclear arsenals during his previous term.
Observers will now watch to see whether Trump will follow through on his stated plans to re-engage Xi in efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
