President Trump arrived at the White House by canceling dozens of measures taken by his predecessor.

But he found at least one last minute measure of Joe Biden that he really wants to keep: a decree which designates more federal land for AI data centers.

“I would like to see federal land open to data centers. I think they are going to be very important,” said Trump, told journalists that it seemed to be something he would support.

It is a rare common ground between the two administrations, which testifies to the growing importance of artificial intelligence. Biden described it as “the most important technology of our time” in his farewell speech.

Trump signed a new decree on Thursday that will kick off the development of an action plan aimed at “supporting and strengthening American domination on AI”. He was flanked by David Sacks, a technological entrepreneur and podcaster that Trump named his AI “tsar”.

Earlier this week, Trump invited the CEOs of Openai, Softbank and Oracle to the White House to announce what, according to them, could possibly be an investment of $ 500 billion in AI data centers in States- United, a project they call Stargate.

The work on the project was well advanced in Texas before the arrival of Trump in power, but the business leaders were impatient to recognize Trump's merit for the announcement of this investment.

“This monumental enterprise is a resounding declaration of confidence in the potential of America under the direction of a new president,” said Trump. “We want to keep it in this country. China is a competitor and others are competitors, we must build this material.”

But Trump does not like all the work of Biden on AI

This does not mean that Trump takes over Biden's work on AI's priorities. From the first day, Trump repealed Biden's first decree on October 2023 AI, a radical measure which provided for a certain regulation on AI development and tests and tackled the questions of equity and discrimination in technology.

Alondra Nelson, who has worked on AI policy under the Biden administration and who is now a member of the Center for American Progress, says this decision was short. She hopes that the new White House will bring more clarity on the global vision of AI.

“It seems that we have trouble, at the start of the Trump administration, to reach a point where we can think about the ECO ecosystem on a chessboard and a wider strategy,” said Nelson.

The Trump administration should be more lax in AI regulation, said John Villasenor of the Institute for Technology, Law and Policy of the UCLA, but he added that this regulation was only 'when he started.

Villasenor is expecting the Trump administration's approach to AI to differ from what he called a “fear” speech of the Biden House, which focused on risks and Prevention of the negative consequences of technology, in the same way that European countries approach AI.

In the meantime, there has already been a conflict on the only announcement made by Trump concerning AI.

On Tuesday, after CEOs in the technological sector announced their investment, Trump's advisor Elon Musk criticized this announcement. Musk, the richest man in the world, has Tesla, SpaceX and the X social media platform.

“They don't really have money,” Musk posted on X.com. “Softbank has secured much less than $ 10 billion. I have good authority.” Openai CEO Sam Altman replied on the platform saying it was wrong.

Trump ignored the dispute on Thursday, explaining that Musk and Altman just don't get along. “I also have some hatreds of people,” said Trump.
