Patna, January 24: Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to Bharat Ratna and the former chief minister of Bihar, Karpoori Thakur, at his 101st anniversary of birth, claiming that his life and her ideals will continue to inspire each generation of the country.

Born on January 24, 1924 in the village of Pithaunjhia (now Karpuririgram), Samastipur, Bihar, Karpoori Thakur has become a true champion of disadvantaged, dedicating his life to the ideals of equality and empowerment. The trip of Karpoori Thakurs as a leader began during the fight for freedom when he was imprisoned for the first time in 1942 as part of the Jus India movement.
This early exposure to struggle and sacrifice laid the foundations for its life commitment to the public service. After the independence of India, he entered politics and was elected for the first time as a deputy in 1952, a position which he held almost continuously with the exception of a brief mandate as MP in 1977.
In 1967, Karpoori Thakur became the Chief Minister of Bihars First Congress Government, famous as the Samvidhan government. Despite its short term of eleven months, this coalition government stood out from its ideological diversity, unit of parties like the Jan Sangh and the Communists, largely due to Thakur's efforts.
Later, he served two mandates as a chief minister of the Bihar (1970-71 and 1977-79). The most notable contributions in Karpoori were in the field of education, which he saw as a key tool to empower the poor and marginalized.
Understanding the obstacles posed by the compulsory requirement of the English language in secondary exams, he abolished it, like many students – especially girls – failed because of their lack of skill in English.
This progressive decision has not only reduced abandonment rates, but also opened the doors of higher education and better opportunities for countless students from rural and economically lower environments. Karpoori Thakur lived an austere life, embodying Gandhian values of simplicity and service.
