Trump optimistic about trade deal with China

US President Donald Trump has expressed confidence in reaching a trade deal with China.

Earlier this month, Trump said he and China's Xi Jinping were communicating through representatives, expressing confidence in their ability to get along.

Trump said he has always had an excellent relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

World leaders two largest economies discussed issues including TikTok, trade and Taiwan in a phone call before Trump took office on Monday.

Since taking office, Trump has talked about a punitive 10% tax on Chinese imports because he says fentanyl is shipped from China to the United States via Mexico and Canada.

However, he did not immediately impose tariffs as he had promised during his election campaign.

Trump also threatened to impose tariffs on the European Union, Mexico and Canada.

“It went well. It was a good, friendly conversation,” Trump said of his call with Xi in an interview with Fox News that aired Thursday evening.

“I can do it,” Trump said in the interview when asked if he could make a deal with China on fair trade practices.

Trump has said he would prefer not to use tariffs against China, but called the tariffs “enormous power.”

“But we have a very big power over China, which is the tariffs, and they don't want it, and I would rather not have to use it, but it's a huge power over China,” Trump added.

Many disagreements

The United States and China are grappling with numerous disagreements.

These include accelerating technological and military rivalry, bitter trade disputes and Washington's concerns over ownership of popular social media app TikTok, whose parent company is China's ByteDance.
