Judicial commissions, release of Imran Khan

Judicial commissions, release of Imran Khan

Islamabad: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has once again changed its stance on negotiations with the government, indicating that it may return to the table one day after calling off the negotiations, The Express Tribune reported.

The PTI has indicated that it may be open to further negotiations. But only if the government meets its key demands, including the constitution of judicial commissions and the release of political prisoners, including PTI founder Imran Khan.

The conditional offer follows the PTI's earlier announcement on January 23, when it set a strict deadline for the establishment of the judicial commissions, but the PTI later suspended negotiations after the government failed to act in the deadline, The Express Tribune reported. .

Earlier, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said that PTI founder Imran Khan suspended negotiations as the government did not respond to the party's demands. The PTI's hesitant stance was laid bare when it not only refused to participate in the fourth round of talks scheduled for January 28, but stressed that talks would only resume if the government agreed to its demands.

Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Khan initially said the dialogue was called off as the government refused to respond to the PTI's demand to form judicial commissions within seven days. However, the government rejected it, calling the deadline set by the PTI “regrettable” and added that the initial agreement referred to “seven working days”, implying that the response deadline was not yet exceeds.

In a reversal of his earlier stance, Gohar Ali Khan said that Imran Khan had simply suspended the dialogue and had not fully convened them. He added that the PTI could reconsider negotiations with the government if its conditions were met, adding that this would demonstrate the sincerity of the government.

The PTI chairman said the lack of progress in the negotiations demonstrated the government's true intentions, calling them into question for reasons that prevented them from announcing the creation of the commissions now, The Express Tribune reported.

Talks between the PTI and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government were halted after Imran Khan asked Gohar Ali Khan to cancel talks with the ruling coalition as the latter had not formed judicial commissions to investigate May 9 and November 26. incidents within the allotted time frame.

After the PTI's decision, government negotiating committee spokesperson Senator Irfan Siddiqui said the deadline had not passed as it was decided in the last meeting that the government side would respond to the charter of PTI demands within “seven working days” and not just seven days. .

Siddiqui said it was agreed during the third round of negotiations that the government commission would give its response within seven working days, which he said would end on January 28 – the day the Assembly Speaker national, Ayaz Sadiq, called the meeting of the committees at 11 a.m. : 45 hours (local time).

Calling on the PTI to review its decision, Siddiqui said the PTI took 42 days to submit its charter of demands and insisted that the government respond to the demands within a week, wondering why it could not just wait five more days.

Currently, the fate of the talks hangs in the balance as the PTI has made it clear that the only way to resume the talks is to set up committees. However, the government side pointed out that the PTI should have waited for the government's response before calling off the negotiations.

Reacting to rumors that the government was not ready to form committees, Irfan Siddiqui said the PTI committee should have waited for the government's written response in the next meeting as the government never said that he would not create judicial commissions.

He said it would have been better if the PTI had made a written statement to end the talks rather than conveying the same to the government through the talks. After the PTI's refusal, Siddiqui had said that the government committee would decide on the course of action on January 28, The Express Tribune reported.

The first round of talks between the PTI and the government took place on December 23, 2024 to discuss long-standing issues and find a way forward. Since negotiations began in December, the two sides have met three times.

As per the government's request, the party founded by Imran Khan had presented its charter of demands in the third meeting on January 16 and was awaiting its response. The talks that were initiated brought political and economic stability to Pakistan by resolving the long-standing issues between the PTI and the government. However, the two sides have now argued over the deadline and the talks have abruptly ended. (ANI)
