President Trump visits hard-hit Swannanoa where Helen survivors feel 'forgotten'

President Donald Trump visited one of the hardest hit areas of Hurricane Helene in western North Carolina on Friday as he toured the town of Swannanoa. Helene residents and survivors of the small mountain community braved the cold for several hours to witness history as Trump toured the damage. It's devastating here and we've been forgotten, survivors said. Entire neighborhoods were destroyed when Hurricane Helene swept through the community nearly four months ago. Crumpled cars and houses are still everywhere you look as damage remains in the community. Survivors also live in campers and some even in tents. Lisa Ryon said she was grateful Trump made the trip so he could see for himself what people are going through. Said Ryon. Survivors also shared stories of what they called a lack of response from the federal government, but also said Trumps visit gives them hope. Josh Shipman said Trump was confident. He's going to do what's right for everyone. He cuts red tape and does what's right for Western North Carolina families. Western North Carolina has been forgotten, and I feel like this will be the effort to get us back to where we need to go and recover, Shipman said.

I can't believe one of the first things he did was worry about us here in North Carolina because we actually experienced it, Ryon said.
