Washington The Trump administration has fired about 17 independent inspectors general at government agencies, a sweeping move to remove oversight from his new administration that some members of Congress suggest are violating federal laws.

The layoffs began Friday evening and began immediately, according to two people familiar with the actions. They spoke on condition of anonymity to provide details that have not been made public. Neither confirmed the exact number of shootings, but an email sent by one of the fired inspectors general said “approximately 17” inspectors general had been removed.

Congress did not receive 30 days' notice of the moves – something even a top Republican is denouncing.

“There may be a good reason for GI. “I would like more new explanations from President Trump. Regardless, the detailed 30-day removal notice that the law requires has not been provided to Congress,” said Grassley, R-Iowa.

The White House did not immediately comment Saturday. President Donald Trump was in Las Vegas for a speech focused on his campaign promise to end federal taxation in councils.

But the moves were consistent with the president's first week in the White House, who laid out a series of measures to remake the federal government. Trump has done everything from using executive orders to impose hiring freezes and reprimanding diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, to suggesting he wants to shut down the Federal Emergency Management Agency and leave disaster recovery to individual states affected by major emergencies.

The role of the modern inspector general dates to post-Watergate Washington, when Congress installed offices within agencies as an independent check against mismanagement and abuse of power. Although inspectors general are presidential appointees, some serve presidents of both parties. All should be non-partisan.

“Yesterday, in the dark of night, President Trump fired at least 12 independent inspector generals at important federal agencies across the administration,” Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer of New York said Saturday. York. “This is a chilling purge and is a glimpse into the lawless approach that Donald Trump and his administration take too often as he becomes president.”

Schumer said the firings “possibly violated federal law” and help demonstrate that the move “is a blatant sign that this is a golden age for abuse in government and even corruption.”

The Washington Post, which first reported the firings, said many were appointees from Trump's first term. Among these inspectors, the general said removed, notably those from the departments of agriculture, commerce, defense and education.

However, Michael Horowitz, the Justice Department's longtime inspector general, who has released politically explosive criminal investigations over the past decade.

In December 2019, for example, Horowitz released a report on the FBI's plan for surveillance warrant requests in the investigation into ties between Russia and Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. But the report also found that this investigation was initiated for legitimate purposes and found no evidence that partisan bias guided investigative decisions.

Democrats were livid over the layoffs.

Senator Amy Klobuchar. D-Minn., noted that inspectors general are “critical to eliminating waste, fraud and abuse throughout the federal government.” The mass shootings were “alarming,” she said.

Rep. Gerald Connolly of Virginia, a ranking Democrat on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, called it “a coup to legally overthrow the independent inspectors general.”

He also suggested that the upcoming move on the fourth full day of Trump's second term could potentially free up a series of positions that can subsequently be filled with loyalists who are strongly sympathetic to the Trump administration.

“Replacing independent inspectors general with political hacks will harm all Americans who rely on Social Security, public benefits and a fair hearing at the IRS on refunds and audits,” Connolly said.

Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts called Trump's actions “a purge of independent watchdogs in the middle of the night.”

“Inspectors General are accused of eliminating government waste, fraud, abuse and preventing misconduct,” Warren posted on X. “President Trump is dismantling checks on his power and paving the way for widespread corruption.”

Yet Trump has aggressively challenged the authority of independent agency oversight groups in the past.

In 2020, he replaced several inspectors general, including those leading the Department of Defense and the intelligence community, as well as the inspector general operated a special oversight board for the 2.2 economic relief package trillion dollars on the Coronavirus.
