Sen. Adam Schiff says Trump 'broke the law' by firing 18 inspectors general
Sen. Adam Schiff, Democrat of California, blasted President Donald Trump on Sunday for his decision to fire 18 inspectors general Friday night and accused the president of breaking the law.
To overturn this blatant violation of the law by saying: Well, technically he broke the law. Yes, he broke the law, Schiff told NBC News Meet the Press.
His comment was in response to Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who earlier in the show told Meet the Press moderator Kristen Welker that technically, yes, Trump had violated the Inspector General Act , which Congress amended to strengthen protections against wrongful termination. general inspectors.
You know, I don't lose a lot of sleep because he wants to change personnel. I just want to make sure he gets a good start,” Graham added.
In a subsequent CNN interview, Graham defended Trump more forcefully, saying, “Yes, I think he should have done that.”
He feels the government hasn't worked very well for the American people. These surveillance people did a pretty lousy job. He wants a new look at Washington. And that seems logical to me, he added.
But Schiff rejected that idea, warning that if we don't have competent, independent inspectors general, we're going to see a replenishment of the swamps.
He added: “Maybe that's the president's goal here…to remove anyone who might draw public attention to his misdeeds.”
Inspectors general serve in federal agencies as independent figures who audit and investigate their agencies when allegations of waste, fraud and abuse arise.
On Friday, Trump fired at least 18 inspectors general, including those from the Defense Department, State Department, Health and Human Services Department and Labor Department.
On Saturday, several lawmakers on both sides of the aisle pointed out that Trump's decision appeared to violate the law, which requires presidents to give Congress 30 days' notice and substantial motivation for the firing before an inspector general be removed from office.
Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, told NBC News in a statement Saturday that he wanted additional explanation from President Trump on his rationale for the firings.
There may be good reasons why the IGs were fired. We need to know if this is the case. I would like further explanation from President Trump. Regardless, the detailed 30-day notice of revocation required by law was not provided to Congress, Grassley said.
And Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., the Senate minority leader, criticized Trump's decision in a speech Saturday morning on the Senate floor.
Yesterday, in the dark of night, President Trump fired at least 12 independent inspectors general from key federal agencies across the administration. This is a frightening purge, Schumer said.
He added: “These firings may be a violation of federal law, which requires Congress to receive 30 days' notice of any intention to fire inspectors general.
On Saturday, a White House official told NBC News that many termination decisions were made under the supervision of legal counsel. But they added that they were checking with the White House counsel's office, even though they did not believe the administration had broken any laws.
It's unclear how Congress can address this apparent violation of the law, but Schiff said Sunday, “We have the power of the purse.” We currently have the authority to confirm or not confirm individuals to Cabinet positions that control or would control agencies whose inspectors general were just fired.
So far, all but one of Trump's Cabinet nominations have passed through the Senate with the full support of the Senate Republican caucus, which holds a 53-47 majority in that chamber. Only one nominee, new Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, lost three Republican Party votes in his final confirmation vote, although he won the majority thanks to a tie-breaking vote from Vice President J.D. Vance.
