Vice President JD Vance said Sunday that the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has not been a good partner in enforcing common-sense immigration, and as a devout Catholic, he hopes they will do better .

The group released a statement earlier this week criticizing several of President Donald Trump's executive actions reprimanding immigration, including allowing federal immigration authorities to arrest people at churches and schools.

As a practicing Catholic, I was heartbroken by this statement, Vance said.

Vance suggested the board might have ultimate reasons for their position.

I think the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops really needs to take a little look in the mirror and recognize that when they receive over $100 million to help resettle illegal immigrants, are they worried about humanitarian concerns? Or are they actually worried about their bottom line? Vance said CBS is confronting the nation.

The Catholic bishops' statement said, in part, while the focus on combating trafficking is welcomed, several of the executive orders signed by President Trump this week are specifically intended to eviscerate the humanitarian protections enshrined in federal law and Undermining due process, subjecting vulnerable families and children to serious danger.

CBS's Margaret Brennan asked Vance for her personal opinions on ice targeting immigrants inside churches and schools, after Trump ended a long-standing policy against the practice.

If you have a person who is convicted of a violent crime, whether it's an illegal immigrant or a non-illegal immigrant, you have to go after that person to protect public safety, Vance said.
