Government promises written response from PTI by tomorrow – Pakistan

Irfan Siddiqui said Imrans' party had agreed to wait seven working days for its response. The opposition party is demanding the immediate appointment of a new chief election commissioner. PTI spox denies divisions after Gandapur replacement

ISLAMABAD: Despite mixed signals from the PTI, the government on Sunday refused to change its stance on talks with the opposition party, reiterating that it would present written responses to its charter of demands at the next meeting, scheduled for tomorrow (Tuesday).

Meanwhile, the opposition party demanded immediate appointment of a new chief election commissioner as the current tenure of Sikandar Sultan Rajas ended on Sunday.

The PTI abandoned the negotiation process a few days ago after the government failed to respond to its demand to form judicial commissions to investigate the May 9, 2023 and November 26, 2024 protests that the party had organized to the release of its imprisoned founder Imran. Khan.

On Saturday, however, PTI general secretary Salman Akram Raja said he had a detailed meeting with the party founder, during which the latter showed interest in meeting the PTI negotiating committee.

The government claimed on Sunday that the PTI had left the dialogue process, despite an agreement that the former would submit its response to the PTI's demands within seven working days, i.e. January 28.

We are not prepared to allow ourselves to be ridiculed (by announcing our answers publicly or in front of the media). We will present our responses to the committee at the next meeting, said Senator Irfan Siddiqui, spokesperson for the government's negotiating team, in a statement.

Mr. Siddiqui quoted lawyer Gohar Ali Khan as saying that Imran Khan had ordered the party to quit the talks as the government was not sincere in forming judicial commissions.

We cannot respond (to PTI's queries) before the 28th. We will not give any response or make any announcement regarding the [judicial] commissions before [the end of] seven days, he added.

On the other hand, Barrister Gohar said in a statement that although the PTI had left the dialogue process, it could convince Imran Khan to rejoin the talks, if the government agreed to hold negotiations on the terms of reference (TDR) of the judicial commissions. .

Earlier today, the PTI called on the government to immediately appoint an honest, impartial and neutral Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) in a transparent manner, in consultation with the party, to revitalize the badly tarnished integrity of the agencies monitoring elections and ensuring the continuity of democratic processes in the country.

The demand coincided with the end of CEC Sikandar Sultan Raja's term on Sunday.

The era of incumbent leaders has left an indelible mark on the country's electoral landscape, PTI Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqqas Akram said in a statement.

Therefore, he added, it is incumbent on the government to ensure timely and consensual appointment of the CEC as well as the provincial heads of the institution to protect it from further destruction.

Mr. Akram stressed the need for the government to immediately constitute a parliamentary committee to oversee these appointments, as stipulated in Article 213 of the constitution.

Mr. Akram also dismissed reports of divisions within the PTI's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter, stressing that the party remains a cohesive and unified force under the leadership of Imran Khan.

It may be recalled that KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, who also headed the party's provincial wing, was replaced a day earlier by MP Junaid Akbar Khan.
