Turkey seeks $6 billion arms deal with Saudi Arabia: report
The Turkish government hopes to strike a $6 billion defense deal with Saudi Arabia that could see the kingdom buy warships, tanks and missiles, Bloomberg reportedciting Turkish officials close to the matter.
A deal including Saudi Arabia joining Turkey's jet-building project could be finalized during a visit that President Recep Tayyip Erdoan is expected to make to the kingdom around March, officials said .
Turkey is trying to develop its defense industry and views Saudi Arabia, one of the world's largest arms importers, as a key market. The two countries signed an agreement in 2023 for the Saudis to purchase high-flying drones from the Turkish company Baykar.
Ankara now wants to sell its main battle tank, the Altaiin Saudi Arabia with missile defense systems, the officials said.
Additionally, he wants Saudi Arabia to become a partner in a Turkish program to develop a fighter jet known as the Kaan. While the first test flight took place early last year, but it will take several more years for it to become operational. Other countries could also join the project in which BAE Systemsis involved in one form or another, according to Turkish officials.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is expected to visit Saudi Arabia this week and will likely discuss the deal, the officials said.
The Saudi government did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Bloomberg. The Turkish Defense Ministry declined to comment.
Ties between Riyadh and Ankara haveimproved in recent years, after being strained by the 2018 assassination in Istanbul of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi by Saudi agents.
