As Turkey's Fidan visits Saudi Arabia, defense ties and Syria on agenda
Ankara's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will visit Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, the Foreign Ministry announced on Monday. The discussions are expected to focus on the situation in Syria and strengthen bilateral cooperation.
Fidan is expected to meet his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, as well as other senior Saudi officials.
Among regional issues, Syria is likely to be at the top of the agenda. Fidan is expected to stress the need for cooperation between Ankara and Riyadh to ensure the removal of international sanctions against Syria, according to a Turkish diplomatic source speaking to journalists ahead of the visit.
Damascus' relations with Riyadh and Ankara have experienced a rapid thaw since the fall of the Syrian regime on December 8. Fidan became the first foreign minister to visit the new transitional government in Damascus on December 22. Meanwhile, Syrian Affairs Minister Asaad Al-Shibani made his first foreign trip to Riyadh on January 2. Most recently, Fidan participated in a regional summit on Syria held in Riyadh on January 12.
On bilateral ties, Fidan is expected to discuss defense cooperation between the two countries. Ankara is seeking a $6 billion defense deal with Saudi Arabia, Bloomberg reported, citing Turkish officials familiar with the matter.
The deal could involve the oil-rich kingdom purchasing warships, tanks and missiles from Türkiye, according to Bloomberg.
Saudi Arabia's Turkey-Saudi defense ties have seen rapid improvement since a rapprochement over the past two years, after bilateral relations hit rock bottom following the killing of dissident Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Istanbul consulate of the Kingdom in 2018.
The Kingdom in 2023 purchased an unknown number of drones from Turkeys Baykar, which manufactures internationally famous TB2-armed drones and is owned by the family of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogans, a younger son-in-law.
Baykar and the state-owned Saudi Military Industries also signed a contract for local drone production in the Kingdom.
The two countries aim to increase their mutual trade volume, which amounted to $8 billion last year, according to official data, to $10 billion this year.
