About Geet Gawai
Geet Gawai is a traditional musical ensemble of Bhojpuri who embodies the rich cultural heritage brought to Mauritius by women of the Bhojpuri belt of India, in particular Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, after the movement of the work of the Girmitiya which started in 1834.
In recognition of its cultural meaning, Geet Gawai was registered on the UNESCO representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity in December 2016.

During his visit to the island nation, Prime Minister Modi will inaugurate more than 20 projects funded by India, ranging from capacity building to community -related infrastructure, officials said. In January 2022, the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding to implement 96 community development projects through Mauritius. Among these, 51 have already been inaugurated. In 2016, India granted Mauritius 353 million USD as part of a special economic set for five key projects, including the Metro Express Project, the Supreme Court building, the new ENT hospital, the social housing project and digital tablets for schoolchildren.
