PM Modi Maurice Visit: Citizen cards abroad presented to the Mauritian PM Ramgolam, his wife Veena
In a special gesture, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented Tuesday Tuesday cards Citizen of India (OCI) to his Mauritian counterpart Navin Ramgoalam and his spouse Veena Ramgoam.
Modis amended the OIC cards to Ramgolam and Veena at the start of a community event attended by more than 3,500 people, including members of the Mauritius, government officials and members of the National Assembly.
“It's a pleasant surprise for me and my wife,” said Ramgolam.
Earlier in the day, Modi presented OIC cards to the president of Maurice Dharambeer Gokhool and the First Lady Vrinda Gokhool. The transfer took place on the first day of its state visit, stressing India's commitment to its diaspora and its bilateral relations with Mauritius.
During the state visit of President Droupadi Murmu to Mauritius in March 2024, India extended the eligibility for OIC cards to Mauritian nationals of the traceable Indian lineage to the seventh generation – an initiative aimed at promoting closer links with the Indian diaspora.
Mauritius is home to 22,188 Indian nationals and 13,19 of OIC card holders, reflecting the significant presence of the Indian community in the country.
The OIC card grants the right to live, work and study indefinitely in India, while facilitating travel without visa and other privileges.
Mauritius has long maintained a welcoming position towards Indian visitors, having introduced a diet without visa for Indian tourists who stayed up to a month in 2004. In reciprocity, Mauritian nationals are entitled to free visas for travel to India, more softening the exchanges of people with pop.
The visit of the PM Modi, which continues until March 12, should include major announcements on the last day, in particular the signing of at least eight understanding memorandums (soft) in areas such as maritime security, culture and community development projects.
It will also inaugurate at least 23 projects funded by India and should announce new projects for the island nation of South East Africa.
