Trump campaigned as a protector of freedom of expression. What happened?

Denver, when President Donald Trump delivered his spouse's spouse in the congress last week, it boasted that during his first weeks to the White House, he had brought freedom of expression to America.
But the defenders of the first amendment say that they have never seen freedom of expression under attack as happened in Trump's second term.
Trump's republican administration has threatened the Democrats of Congress with an investigation for criticizing the conservatives, fired federal subsidies which include the language it opposes, sanctioned law firms that represent Trump's political opponents and arrested the organizer of student demonstrations that Trump criticized as anti-Semitic and anti-American.
Your right to say something depends on what the administration thinks, which is not at all freedom of expression, said Will Creeley, legal director of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, a non -partisan first amendment group.
Trump took the credit of the arrest by immigration agents from Mahmoud Khalil, a student graduated from the University of Columbia and a legal permanent resident who helped direct pro-Palestinian demonstrations. Khalil's lawyers say that the government aims for its activism and to discriminate particular points of view.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday that the administration would revoke the visas or green cards for Hamas supporters, that the United States has appointed a terrorist organization and denied that the policy threatened the first amendment.
This is not freedom of expression, “Rubio told journalists in Shannon, Ireland.” These are people who are not allowed to be in the United States to start. No one has the right to a student visa. No one is entitled to a green card.
A federal judge earlier this week ordered immigration officials not to withdraw Khalil from the country while his case is settled.
This is the first arrest of many to come. We know that there are more students in Columbia and other universities across the country who have embarked on a pro-terrorist, anti-Semitic and anti-American activity, and the Trump administration will not tolerate it, Trump wrote.
Target universities on language and demonstrations
Even some Trump allies were not comfortable with this approach: there is almost no one I do not want to expel, wrote the conservative commentator Ann Celter on X, but, unless they have committed a crime, is it not a violation of the first amendment?
At the other end of the political spectrum, activists who organized themselves to protest against the war in Gaza were dismayed by the move of the administration.
We have discovered our rights to the first amendment since the children were children, said Germn Rafael Gonzlez, member of the justice of the University of Stanford in Palestine. But it's really a myth. This is not the reality in which we live at the moment. And its frightening.
Before Khalil's arrest during the weekend, the administration put pressure on Columbia university to repress anti-Israeli activism among students and teachers, and Trump threatened to take a college that supports the demonstrations he deems illegal.
He also made an order prohibiting federal funding from what his administration labels diversity, equity and inclusion, which led to a frost on federal subsidies, because the administration examines them for prohibited words such as sex.
Todd Wolfson, president of the American Association of University Professors, who continued the Trump administration about his DEI ban and won an injunction against a federal judge, said the administration is taking over projects that have prohibited words, research subsidies in areas such as the diversity of crops or the differences in infant mortality in urban and rural areas.
No one really wants Big Brother to tell you what you can look for, Wolfson said. These are questions to which our country must know the answers.
“The most serious threats” for freedom of expression
The Republicans for several years are the party complaining of the offense in the first amendment, complaints concerning the awakening colleges canceling conservative speakers to denigrate the social media companies which they accuse of censorship of the conservative views, in particular by cutting Trump after January 6, 2021, attacking by his supporters of the American Capitol. Florida and Texas controlled by the GOP have even developed laws to limit the way in which social media companies regulate the content, although the United States Supreme Court suspended them last year due to any violations of the first amendment.
Last year, Trump positioned himself as champion of the first amendment during his campaign, and he signed a decree just a few hours after being sworn in by prohibiting anyone in the federal government to interfere with the rights to the freedom of expression of the Americans. But he also made promises that have reported that he could oppose some of the fundamental protections of the first amendment, such as the expulsion of foreign students who protested in Israel or prohibit the burns of the flag, which the Supreme Court judged is protected the freedom of expression.
Creeley, of the individual Rights Foundation, said that he had tried to be optimistic before Trump took office only the new president would resolve certain first amendment problems. Instead, he said, it got worse.
I don't remember anything like it, “said Creeley.” I have defended the rights of the first amendment since 2006, and this is the most serious threat that I remember.
Actions against the media and lawyers to cool dissent
The Trump administration also continued the media.
The president continued several points of sale for a coverage he does not like, and his people appointed to the Federal Communications Commission helped put pressure on these media companies. Meanwhile, Trump's FCC opened surveys on other media companies with which Trump has simulated, and the administration has prohibited the Associated Press from the White House press pool, because it will not use Trump's favorite name for the Gulf of Mexico. The AP continues to restore its access for the reasons for the first amendment.
The administration has also targeted law firms for their affiliations with the previous democrats or administration. He stripped security authorizations for lawyers for a private company that provided legal services for special lawyer Jack Smith, who investigated Trump during the mandate of President Joe Biden, and Perkins Coie, a long -standing democratic company that Trump blames for the survey of his campaign with Russia during his first mandate. On Wednesday, a judge blocked part of the order.
Jameel Jaffer, director of the Knight First Amendment Institute in Columbia, said that attacks on law firms had frightened certain high -level lawyers to take cases that challenge the administration which, according to him, is the point.
There is a long tradition of lawyers who face controversial customers, sometimes against our government, said Jaffer. The Trump administration clearly said that it would retaliate against lawyers.
Jaffer said that attacks on freedom of expression and the association are intended to relax dissent by convincing people in the opposition that they could become targets.
We are all able to participate in the government by engaging in protest, said Jaffer. When the government closes this kind of speech, it closes democracy.
“I will not be silenced”
The Trump administration has even targeted the members of the Congress.
Trump appointed Ed Martin, a defense lawyer who represented some of the people charged during the January 6 attack, as an active American lawyer in the Columbia district. Martin wrote to Chuck Schumer, the head of the Senate minority and one of the best democrats in the country, telling him that a comment he made in 2020, warning the conservative judges of the Supreme Court that they would pay the price to cancel the right to abortion could be considered a threat. Schumer has apologized since the declaration.
Martin also wrote to the Democrat representative Robert Garcia in California, warning him that the comments he made about advisor Trump, Elon Musk, could be considered a threat. Garcia said Democrats should bring real weapons to this bar fight.
Congress members must have the right to oppose the Trump administration, “replied Garcia on the Musks X platform.” I will not be silenced.
Fernando reported to Chicago. Matt Lee in Shannon, Ireland, contributed to this report.
