The federal judge deals with Donald Trump's legal blow on the executive order

The federal judge deals with Donald Trump's legal blow on the executive order

A federal judge prevented the Trump administration on Wednesday from enforcing certain parts of a decree aimed at punishing Perkins Coie, an eminent law firm linked to the search for opposition funded by democratic during the 2016 presidential campaign on Donald Trump's ties with Russia.

Why it matters

After his return to the White House in January, President Donald Trump signed a burst of decrees, including one targeting the law firm, alleging “a dishonest and dangerous activity”. The order blocked security authorizations for the lawyers for Perkins Coie, who said he was facing the financial consequences of the decision.

Many executive orders from Trump, aimed at promulgating his scanning program on questions ranging from immigration to the reshaping of the federal bureaucracy, are faced with legal challenges that give mixed results for the president.

What to know

US District Judge Beryl Howell, granting a temporary ban prescription, ranked on the side of Perkins Coie one day after the cabinet has filed a federal legal action that was illegally targeted for his work. Howell has ruled that the decree could have a scary effect on the legal profession, warning that it suggests that lawyers can be punished for represented customers or detained views unfavorable to the administration.

“Such a circumstance threatens the very foundation of our legal system,” wrote Howll. “Our justice system is based on the fundamental belief that justice works better when all parties have zealous defenders.”

Howell, which former President Barack Obama has appointed, stressed that targeting lawyers according to their clients or political associations undermines the integrity of the judicial system.

The chief of staff of the Attorney General Pam Bondi, Chad Mizelle, defended the order, arguing that Trump had clearly the power to act against the entities which, according to him, present a threat of national security.

“If that means excluding individuals who are no longer trustworthy with the secrets of the nation, it is a principle of foundation of our Republic,” said Mizelle.

However, Perkins Coie said he was undergoing financial consequences resulting from order after customers with government contracts have ended their legal agreements with the company.

What people say

Dane Voutswinkas, a lawyer representing Perkins Coie: “This decree performs a ball in the rule of law, to the principles that promote democracy.”

The former federal prosecutor Joyce White Vance, on X, formerly Twitter: “It is just a Tro, but it is a great victory for Perkins Coie, the legal profession, the rule of law and democracy. The judge reigns that the presidents cannot use the power of the presidency to lead a personal vendet which strikes at the heart of the lawyers of the capacity to represent the customers, who are people.”

Lawyer and Trump Ally Mike Davis, on X: “Judge Beryl Howell is an Obama judge, who previously was a high-level assistant to the judicial president, Patrick Leahy (D-VT). She previously was a supervising judge for the mueller's false collusion against President Trump. She is a partisan hack.”

What happens next

Howll’s decision is a temporary ban order, so the legal proceedings will continue pending a final order.
