Prime Minister John Swinney met the son of US President Donald Trump, Eric, Bute House in Edinburgh.

Eric Trump is a senior manager in his father's business – the Trump organization – which has golf stations in Ayrshire and Aberdeenshire.

The meeting took place on tea and cookies, would have lasted around 50 minutes and would only focus on Trump's golf stations, according to his son.

This comes after the Prime Minister said he did not think he would be appropriate for Donald Trump to be offered a second state visit to the United Kingdom.

It is understood that Eric Trump flew to Edinburgh Airport earlier Thursday.

Trump Turnberry, the Ayrshire complex, was vandalized by a pro-Palestinian group over the weekend.

The red paint was trained on one of the buildings. The words “Gaza is not for sale” were sprayed on a green and another green seemed to have been unearthed.

After the meeting, which also included Sarah Malone – executive vice -president of Trump International – the Scottish government said that the Prime Minister “regularly met business people”.

A spokesperson said: “The meeting with Trump gave the opportunity to discuss the investment potential of Scotland and the Prime Minister was happy to hear the continuous commitment of the company towards Scotland, in particular the Aberdeenshire and the Ayrshire.”

Eric Trump said the meeting was “very warm and friendly” and that he was thanked for the investment of the Trump organization in Scotland.

He said: “Our discussions focused solely on the Trump organization's commitment to create in Trump Turnberry and Trump International in Aberdeenshire two of the most emblematic golf destinations in the world.

“We have not discussed Scottish or American policy, but we focused on golf. It was a very positive and constructive meeting on business and investment.”

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer used an American visit earlier this month to present a King's letter to Donald Trump, offering a first meeting in Scotland to discuss the logistics of a second state visit.

The American presidents of the second mandate are traditionally not offered by the States and were rather invited for tea or lunch with the monarch, generally to the castle of Windsor.

The king invited President Trump to meet him in Balmoral or Dumfries House – who are both near Trump stations.

Balmoral is only about 58 miles (93 km) from the Trump International Golf Resort in Menie, where the president is expected to open a new course appointed according to his mother this summer.

The next day, the American president had a meeting with the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, who turned into an ardent confrontation.

Trump accused Zelensky of “playing with the Second World War” and, alongside Vice-President JD Vance, demanded that he show more gratitude for years of American support.

The Ukrainian president has rejected the suggestions of his most powerful partners that he should work harder to agree with a cease-fire with Vladimir Putin. They replied that he was “disrespectful”.

A certain number of SNP deputies have criticized the Prime Minister's relationship with Trump on social networks, including the Westminster Party leader Stephen Flynn, who said that Starmer “better gets up from his knees and revokes this offer from a state visit”.

Taking a different tone of colleagues, Swinney said that he had welcomed the role that the Prime Minister took and that he argued him trying to find a means of a difficult situation.

But he added that he could not see how a state visit could go ahead if Trump was “not one of our constant supporters in the protection of the future of Ukraine”.

Swinney previously said that he would use Trump's affinity for Scotland in order to prevent prices to be applied to imports to the United States, especially on Scottish whiskey.

He had publicly supported Harris, the Democratic candidate, with a view to the 2024 presidential election.

But he had a telephone conversation with the new president in December and said that Trump then “expressed his enthusiasm for Scotland”.

The Scottish Greens, who previously declared that Trump was not welcome in Scotland, said that the decision to meet Eric Trump was “totally inappropriate” and had sent a “terrible message”.

Co-Leader Lorna Slater added: “Regarding the trumps, the border between business and politics has always been vague.”

The Prime Minister’s support for Kamala Harris before the US elections caused an unhappy response from Eric Trump.

Quick advance of several months, and after a meeting with John Swinney in Bute House, the tone of the president's son is very different – the approach of the FM previously described as “nasty”, today it is characterized as “warm and welcoming”.

Likewise, the Prime Minister's telephone call with the president after his electoral victory was described as “positive”.
