Donald Trump said he thought that the United States would annex Greenland, a few days after the country's Prime Minister said: “We don't want to be Americans.”

At a meeting of the Oval Office with NATO Secretary General, Mark Rutte, the American president was questioned about his hopes of annexing Greenland.

“I think it will happen,” he said. “I haven't thought about it much before, but I sit with a man who could be very instrumental.

“You know Mark, we need it for international security. We have a lot of our favorite players navigating the coast and we have to be careful.”

Trump questioned Denmark's claim on autonomous territory, saying that Denmark was “very far” from Greenland despite the fact of the country's kingdom.

“A boat landed there 200 years ago or something. They say they have rights,” said Trump. “I don't know if it's true. I don't think that is the case, actually.”

He said that the United States already had a military presence in Greenland and added: “Maybe you will see more and more soldiers go.”

This comes after the center-right party in Greenland won an election in a result considered as a rejection of Mr. Trump's interference in island politics.

The Demokraatit party promotes slow to the independence of Denmark-with its chief Jens-Frederik Nielsen by saying to Sky News on the eve of the elections “We want to build our own country by ourselves”.

In his briefing at the White House, Trump said that the election result was very good for the United States and said that “the person who did the best is a very good person as far as we are concerned”.

He previously promised “billions of dollars” in investment and told the Greenlanders that he “would make you rich”.

Trump also reacted to the remarks of Vladimir Putin on Russia which ended the fight in Ukraine, but the addition of “many questions” remain on the proposals for a cease-fire of 30 days.

The American president said that the declaration of his Russian counterpart was not complete and reiterated his desire to speak to him, adding: “I hope that Russia will do the right thing.”
