Turkish officials visit Damascus after the Syries take care of the group led by the Kurds
The best diplomat, Minister of Defense and Head of Intelligence of Turkey, made a surprise visit to Damascus, just days after the interim government of Syria concluded an agreement to integrate an armed group led by the United States in the Syrian army.
The agreement to incorporate Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) into the Syrian army followed intense clashes last week between government forces and armed men loyal to the President ousted Bashar al-Assad.
The surveillance groups reported that violence, which mainly targeted members of the Alaoute religious minority to which Assad belongs, resulted in hundreds of civil dead.
Ahmad al-Sharaa, the acting president of Syria and a former rebel, met Turkish officials from the Syrian capital, notably Hakan Fidan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yasar Guller, Minister of Defense, and Ibrahim Kalin, chief of national intelligence.
They were accompanied by the Turkey ambassador to Syria, Burhan Koroglu.
According to the Turkey news agency, DHA, a official of the Turkish Defense Ministry, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the visit aimed to assess “how the agreement concluded will be implemented and its reflections on the ground”.
The official also added that Turkey's expectations in Syria had not changed, reiterating his request for dismissal of terrorist activities in Syria, the disarmament of terrorists and the expulsion of foreign fighters in the country.
Turkey considers that the SDF and its military wing, the popular protection units (YPG), are terrorist organizations because of their links with the Kurdistan workers' party (PKK), which has led an insurrection against Turkey for decades.
Meanwhile, while the Turkish delegation was unexpected to Damascus, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan gave a prize for “benevolence and kindness” to a former Syrian fighter pilot, Ragheed al-Tatari, who had been imprisoned for 43 years.
The award ceremony, organized by a foundation linked to the religious authority of Turkey, honored Al-Tatari for its perseverance.
Al-Tatari had been held under the reign of Hafez Assad and Bashar Assad since 1981, with contradictory reports on his imprisonment. He would have been imprisoned for refusing to bomb the city of Hama and not to have reported an attempt by another desert pilot. Al-Tatari, whose imprisonment is considered by human rights groups as one of the longest in Syria for a political prisoner, was released in December when the opposition forces released him.
In his speech, Erdogan congratulated Al-Tatari as “the courageous Syrian pilot who listened to his conscience”.
