PM Modi on the Podcast Lex Fridman: PM Modi reflects on the riots of Godhra 2002, the disinformation that they were more important
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a podcast with Lex Fridman, said there was a concerted effort to create the perception that the 2002 riots were the greatest in Gujarat, when it was far from being reality.
Prime Minister Modi stressed that Gujarat had a long history of violence “long before being in the photo”. He described how the riots have occurred in the state almost every year, but noted that there was no community violence since 2002.
“If you review the data before 2002, you will see that Gujarat faced frequent riots. Fire covers were constantly imposed somewhere. Community violence would break out on trivial issues such as deer flight competitions or even bicycle collisions,” he said.
Prime Minister Modi, who was the chief minister of Gujarat at that time, noted that his political opponents of the center had tried to create a false story to punish him even after the courts have erased his name more than once.
“At that time, our political opponents were in power, and of course they wanted all the allegations against us to stick. They wanted to see us punished. Despite their incessant efforts, the judiciary analyzed the situation meticulously twice and finally found us completely innocent,” he said.
Recalling the burn incident of the Godhra train which led to the 2002 riots, Prime Minister Modi described it as an “extremely volatile” period, which took place in the context of other major terrorist attacks in India and in the world.
“It was a tragedy of unimaginable magnitude, people were burned alive. You can imagine, in the context of incidents like the diversion of Kandahar, the attack on Parliament, or even on September 11, then to have so many people killed and burned alive, you can imagine how much the situation was held and volatile for assembly, adding violence.
Stressing the attacks on the New York twin towers, the Parliament and the Jammu-et-Cachemire Assembly in 2001, Prime Minister Modi said: “In just eight to ten months, these main world terrorist attacks took place which led to the effusion of blood and the loss of innocent lives. In such a tense environment, even the smallest spark can light obstacles.”
Describing time as extremely difficult, the Prime Minister said that Gujarat was still in shock of “a devastating earthquake” when he became chief minister, followed by riots during the first year to assume him. “I was a person who had absolutely no prior experience with the government,” he said in the podcast.
